Prescribed Burning Underway at Soldiers Delight
The regular fall prescribed burn season at Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area, which began on November 10, will continue through November 24. “Prescribed burning is an essential step in restoring 1,000 acres of this native, fire-dependent grassland and oak savanna ecosystem that supports more than 35 rare, threatened, and endangered species,” stated Glenn Therres, Associate Director of DNR’s Wildlife & Heritage Service.

What’s Killing the Bats?
Bat populations appear to be in rapid decline throughout the Eastern United States. Dana Limpert is a Biodiversity Analyst and a bat expert with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. In a recent Natural Resource Magazine article, she explores possible causes of population decline. Scientists haven’t pinpointed an exact cause. It’s likely there are a number of factors. Wind turbines, disease, and lack of natural habitat are contributing causes.

Beyond B.O.W. Photo Album
The 2008 Fall Deer Clinic & Hunt was held at Blossom Point Military Base recently. Participants learned the how’s and why’s of deer hunting, including safety, hunting skills, white-tailed deer biology and population management, with lots of time spent at the shooting range honing new skills. Saturday began before sun-up, with women and men stationed in their tree stand for a day of hunting. By the end of the day, many had harvested and field dressed their deer and everyone had a great story to tell. Learn more about Becoming an Outdoors Woman.
