A sucessful meeting at "The Honeyhole"
Captwalleye 11/27/2011 - 19:57 Trip Reports Liberty
I finally got a chance to go fishin'.So...I got up this morning and went looking for trouble.I went to a place that has to be hit when conditions are just right.I got the there and it was actually a bit high for what I wanted to do and the place I wanted to stand.I managed to get to a spot to try casting from and worked a 3" Swimbait and a suspending jerkbait.I got one confirmed hit on the SBJ and hooked a 7" Yellow Perch.I got one other possible hit but no hookup.Put probably forty cast into that spot and decided to move on.
I moved to another place and walked and climbed on in.The "Honeyhole" as I call it.Is a place I preferr to fish before and into daybreak and before, into, and beyond dusk.I was late but just really wanted to see what was going on there.I cast some and also moved some brush and branches around to give myself some casting room.It is a spot on a spot.Steep rocky bank with deep water right up to the shore. This place has BIG FISH potential, and has produced in the past.

How has this year of fishing done? What would be your best fishes this year( or so far for the musky chasers)?

Took my first shot this year and put the boat in the water. Fished from 8:30-3:30, and caught one 13" Large Mouth. He was pretty spunky, and left the water four times, so I got my money's worth out of the little guy. Felt great to get back out, and feel something pulsating on the end of the line. I caught him on a beaver hut on a small Texas rigged worm.
The lake is still down about four feet, I'd guess, with water temps 56-59 degrees. Parts of the main lake were warmer than back in the coves...but with all the warm temps and SW winds lately, I'm sure that has changed by now.

Hit Liberty again. I got in the water about 11:00 a.m. I decided I wanted to fish something different, so I headed to some old house foundations in 20-35 feet of water. It's a pretty long ride, so I decided to take it easy and troll all the way...thought I might happen upon a striper. Anyway, I could not believe I didn't catch a fish. I thought the vertical structures right on the edge of the creek channel would pay off...but it wasn't to be. I vertical jigged a blade bait, and slowly pulled a big "jig and pig" through all the structures, but didn't even get a tap. Water dropped another degree to 48.9, had a stiff cold wind blowing. When I got home I checked the air temps...39 degrees. The pellet stove sure felt great. I'll be back out on Friday...

I took off a half day Friday to give Liberty a try. It was spitting rain, cloudy, with a breeze out of the SE, water temps ~56 degrees. It looked to me like a perfect day to catch a few fish. I fished the afternoon for about four hours without so much as a tap. My plan was to start at Oakland point and fish all of the main lake points touched by the channel, back to the ramp. I tried a big tube, SJB, and a blade bait. This lake is killing me...at least I know where the fish aren't :). I think I'll head back in the creeks next time (although I did hit a few secondary poins in Locust).

Finally got a chance to get out on the water. It was a lot colder than I expected with a brisk NE wind a blowing. I got out early to see if I could get a top-water bite going, but it didn't happen. I spent most of my time working a Carolina rigged tube over 30' deep structure, but ended up only catching one chunky smallie (~14") on a blade bait jigged in 30-35'. I did find a nice area close to the boat ramp that should produce some fish in the upcoming month or so. I have the week of Thanksgiving off, so I hope I can find some fish to cooperate then.
Water temps were 57-58 degrees.

Duane and I hit the lake early trying for a top water bite, but didn't get any takers. However on the way over to the point we hit first, I marked some fish and structure in ~30' of water. Of course I threw a bouy out so we could come back and give it a shot. When we returned I was casting a Carolina rig, and felt the tell-tale bump-bump, set the hook on a nice two pounder. That thing gave me a fit, and didn't want to come to the boat. I managed three more smaller fish from two other spots...all in ~30' of water. We got back to the ramp around 11:30..in time for the Redskin's game.

I went out very early Sunday morning and had a couple of half-hearted strikes at top-water plugs early, but no hook-ups. Quite a bit later, my partner caught one dink fish on a jitter bug fished close to a pile of rocks sticking out of the water. I finally got a chunky 2 pounder (on a tube) under the 26 bridge, on a hump in 22 feet of water. It was a slow morning...the amazing thing to me was the water temps...63 degrees. I went back and looked at a post of mine from exactly one month ago, and the water temp was the exact same. I guess all of this rain and cooler weather really knocked it down a bunch. I'm not sure how high the water temps got before they went down, because I haven't been out.

Took off a couple hours from work and got on the lake about 2:30. I started on a wind blown point with a jerk bait and wham! thought I had a whopper smallmouth, but it was a 20 inch striper. It really put up a tussle on my light outfit. I headed back in a rocky cove and got one 15" smallie. I went through a pretty good dry spell, and then right before I was going to call it quits, I got suprised by a chunky 14' largemouth...I got real calm out, I wish the wind would have been blowing a bit, I think I would have done better.
edit: I forgot to mention, the water temps in the main lake 61, the warmest water I found was 63.
