Changed into my waders and wading shoes and bailed over the bank.Started off with a tube and got a dink Smallie on the second cast. Also it started to rain lightly.I was feeling froggy so I threw on a 3/8 oz black spinner bait and commence casting it around, and alternated between the tube and the spinnerbait.I lost the tube, and swapped over to a #8 Husky Jerk. That was a good call.I stood in one spot and caught six Smallies from 6"-12" in the push water between two rocks. After wearing out that spot I moved down stream and out into the water.I worked myself out to a small hump with a bush on it big enough to lay my pack and spare rod down on.I really started throwing the spinnerbait and did catch one about 10" and had another slap it but not get hooked. The Husky jerk bite stopped so I tried another tube. That didn't last long, and the River God ate it too.I decided to try something different.I had a 6" Sluggo (golden shiner)in my pack from another trip and tied it on.I was fan casting it around letting it sink to different depths and popping it.I made an extra long cast up into an eddy behind two submerged rocks and started working it.I wound up the slack one time and gave it a pop.Well the line popped back on it's own,and I set the hook.NICE! The rod loaded up and the fish took off taking drag.Oh yeah,a good one!It jumped and I about died.It looked huge.I kept my cool, and it stayed hooked even though it jumped four time.I finally got it to come to hand and landed a beautful 18" Smallie.I let it go and it started to just plain old rain than.I cast a few more times with no takers.Decided I had my reward and pack up and waded in.
I hooked up with Ben (ogBudha) yesterday to do a little fishing on the UP. As always when you fish with someone for the first time, you never know what you’re getting yourself into. But Ben turns out to be a first class guy and angler. We were hoping to get some fishing in before the thunderstorms blew in, so we rolled the dice and off we went.
When I got to the ramp about 1400, Ben was already waiting in the water for me so I carried my gear down and off we went. It didn’t take long for us to get the skunk out of the boat as we picked up a couple at the first hole. Tubes seemed to be doing the trick, but in the beginning Ben seemed to be targeting only 10-12” bass of the green variety
After a few minutes we headed to the next hole and Ben turned it on, catching quite a few fish in the 14-17” range…all fat and sassy. Tubes were definitely the ticket, with fish holding in the typical current seams and chunk rock location around points. We didn’t see much bedding activity, but we weren’t fishing in typical bedding locations either so that didn’t surprise us.
All in all, it was a pretty good trip with us boating close to 30 fish. We had a few dinks mixed in there, but the 14+” fish were all healthy and didn’t realize how small they were. Thanks for the ride Ben, I look forward to the next one.

What a surprise, Tim called me yesterday, seems he has a couple days to burn and asked me if I was able to get out on Thursdsay, I aquired a kitchen pass and we decided on the big river and the big boat. Due to my eldest having an orthodontist apt, we got a late start, hit the river by 11:00.
It sure is amazing the similaritys between the Monocacy and the Potomac, but the differences in how to fish. We started off with fast, loud and big baits with no success not even a bite. Later I switched to using the old standby a 5" grub in watermelon, finally got a dink in the boat, no skunk today. We decided to anchor about 50' below a structure and find a big area of flat water and slow down, way down. Senkos seemed to do it and I got bit right away and a big jump... gone. Tim switched and we started catching nice fish, although I was using watermelon and doing well Tim tried white and I rec'd a spanking like a red headed step child. Finally I lucked into a good one and landed it. These fish were taking drag off Tims bait cast rig like nothing. This was midday on the warmest day this spring, smallies rule. What started as a slow day ended better than I could have thought.
I need to talk Tim into a yak soon, its just a cool way to fish but the jet sure is handy when you don't have a ton of time. I will send in some pics to check out.
see ya Too Big
