Windy Windy Windy - Fishing with Smalljaw & The Duder
muskalungee 03/30/2008 - 13:28 Trip Reports Potomac

Got out for a few hours in the AM on Saturday with Smalljaw and boy was it cold and windy. We ran into OGbudha (ben) at the launch and tool around a little while before getting started fishing. We faced very tough fishing conditions for sure but we toughed through it and were rewarded for our efforts. While we didn't land any fish over 17", all our fish were pretty fat and healthy. In the afternoon, I traded in the old bitter one for theDuder and we went back at it. Again, same deal but the conditions were a bit easier as the wind calmed down later in the afternoon. For the day, we had ~10 smallies in the boat and one real nice Greenie which smalljaw picked up on our last stop on our way back to the ramp.
Another great day to be out on the river (regardless of the conditions), as I had a chance to catch up a bit with Smalljaw and hang a bit with my brother....oh yeah and we caught some fish. :)
The rodeo is coming up this weekend. I'll be fishing all day Friday, and Sat/Sun afternoons. Hope to see some of you out there.

FORT WASHINGTON, MD — Ron Lewis of Point of Rocks, Md. was fishing in the tidal Potomac River near Fort Washington on Sunday March 23 when he hooked and landed a new state record blue catfish. Ron who is an accomplished fisherman was targeting blue catfish, but the size of this particular fish caught him and his partner by surprise.

First Post Ever - Good Day at Seneca - Berkley Vanish line is horrible.

I have been reading the posts on this site for several years and enjoy everyone's fishing stories from around the area. My kids are small so I don't get out too often and I have never had any decent stories to contribute so I live vicariously through everyone else's stories. Keep them coming!
I was able to get my fishing partner Greg to bring the boat down to Seneca late yesterday afternoon. We anchored at a spot where he had some success in the past. Within minutes he had some bites and a great smallmouth was landed in about 15 minutes. I say it was in the four pound class but he says three. Greg caught another almost equal in size about 30 minutes later. He also caught a small largemouth. There was the one that got away as well. Greg hooked a smallmouth bigger than the first and just as it got close to the boat it spit the hook. It was a monster. I landed 2 healthy smallmouth, each around 2 - 2.5 lbs. Greg caught his on a jig and plastic trailer. Both of mine were caught on tubes. The lighter colors worked better yesterday.
Skunked...again

Me and Dad took advantage of the holiday to head up to the warm water discharge on the Potomac and do some fishin. Well, in 2 and a half hours, we got nothin'. Skunked. I'm really starting to get tired of getting skunked. Lack of experience, I guess, but it's just frustrating to go again and again and not catch fish. Fished grubs and hair jigs for bass, then tried some doughbait for catfish and corn for carp. Hooked up with something (not sure what) on a grub that spit the hook. We talked to a guy a little downriver from us who had a nice (18-20 inch) catfish on a stringer. Cut bluegill was the ticket for him. The river was really high and muddy, plus the high wind gusts, and it just made for a tough day to fish. I can't wait for spring, I'm getting sick of winter. It's coming, just a few more weeks....

Hit the river during the nasty storm front on Sunday. Had my wife and 2 labs with me. Wind gusts of 30-40 mph and high muddy water sounded like fun. I walked the shoreline looking for protected spots with deepwater...or decent depth water that was out of the flow. I hit 3 or so spots and then settled in on a nice spot I really thought would produce. I worked it slow and eventually picked up a chunky 16" out of one of these pockets. Fish hit a nice jig that was made for my son. It was a nice way to spend my birthday. Spring is coming.....spring is coming

Potomac Fishin

Dad and I decided to take advantage of our day off from school today to head up to Dickerson and fish the warm water discharge. Last time we went, we got skunked, but we decided to go farther upstream today and scout out more bank. After about 45 minutes with no bites, we found a nice spot with plenty of cover nearby, so we started fishing there. We saw plenty of bluegills, pumpkinseeds, carp, and a couple bass. In a little bit, Dad caught the first, and what turned out to be the only fish, on a grub. It was a pumpkinseed about 6 inches long that didnt even fight til it got a foot away from the bank. We fished for another hour and a half or so, with plenty of bites. I hooked up with a small bass, I'd guess about 7 or 8 inches long, that earned its freedom by diving under a log. It was a little disapointing, but there were plenty of fish around. Next time we'll know to head straight to that area, and fish there. I saw a couple bass about a foot long, and a couple carp as well. Even though I got skunked, at least Dad caught something, and we found a nice spot to fish in the future. Ran into a guy a little downstream from us who said that corn will catch carp in this area, we'll bring some next time. We froze our butts off, but we had a really good time. I'll get em next time, I know. I think Dad got to outfish me today to make up for a time earlier in the year when I caught fish and he didn't :) Good luck if any of you guys get out.
First day fishing in 08

Me, my dad, and my brother (Dan) decided to take advantage of the nice day outside to head up to the warm water fishing area and see what was bitin. We headed to Wal Mart after church to get our licenses for the new year (I dont need one for another year, but Dan and Dad do.) We also bought 2 packs of white grubs, some chicken livers, nightcrawlers, and weedless jig heads. Then we headed out to Dickerson. We got there about 2:45 and headed down the path to the river, and sort of slipped and slided down the muddy bank til we found a good spot. Started with the grubs on jig heads, and got nothin. Switched to the nightcrawlers after awhile. Again, nothing. Finally, we switched to the livers. Plenty of bites, but no hookups. There was one that almost dragged the rod out of my hand, but when I went to set the hook, Mr Whiskers took off and didnt come back. What I love about catfishin is the simplicity of it. You just rig up with a worm or liver, cast, and just wait, relax, and enjoy the outdoors. We ended up gettin skunked in 2 hours fishin, not really a surprise to me, but I still had a good time, and we found a good spot to bank fish the Potomac. Thanks to new member Huffnhustle for the tips he gave me on this area. I'm sure we'll start catchin em soon. I'm startin to realize how tough it really is to catch fish in the wintertime. I'm gonna keep tryin, but I aint gonna expect much until spring. Once spring comes, I know my fishin is gonna take off. The water was pretty murky, and the bank was VERY muddy and slippery. Water was pretty calm also. Oh well, I still had fun, and I'm lookin forward to goin again soon.
Bank Fishing The Potomac
Steve826 12/28/2007 - 22:40 Potomac
Hi everyone. As the new year is coming, I'm gonna start getting back to fishing more. It's been 3 or 4 weeks since I've gotten out and I wanna get out soon. Dad and I decided are next stop is gonna be the warm water area on the Potomac at the power plant. When spring comes though, the water there might be too warm for fish to stay at, but I could be wrong. What I want to know is if anyone knows of any good places to fish from the bank at on the Potomac once it gets warm out. We've found a few places on the Monocacy, but we haven't found a whole lot of bank fishing on the Potomac. If anyone has any suggestions to where we should try, please let me know. I'd really appreciate that.
