What A Ride!
jackson  07/25/2008 - 03:47  Boating  Impoundments  Roll Your Own

My Granddaughter Kaylie, Jacob's sister, wanted to know why she is never in photos I posted here? I then realized I'd not taken her with me this year! So we took off for a local "large pond". Due to gin clear water, bluebird skies, and significant grass growing out to 20' deep, not to mention the wind, catching brim was not in the cards. Enough excuses?? So after significant "discussion" we decided who was going to drive or rather do circles back to the ramp! An hour latter, normally 15 min., we arrived. What a ride! I;m still dizzy. Today, Friday, I'll be taking Her to a local stream. Hopefully I can help her hook up with her first smallie & first photo with a fish!

Tough day chasin greenies
Steve826  07/24/2008 - 21:00  Trip Reports  Impoundments  Roll Your Own    We hit up the pond we've been fishin at lately, from 6-7:30 tonight. I just couldnt get a bite. I tried grubs, tubes, and topwater with nothing to show for it. My dad had a big bass jump completely out of the water for his topwater, but it somehow missed the trebles and took off not to be seen again. The pond was very muddy due to the rain the last couple days so I had to use bright colors-cream white grubs, and pearl pepper tubes-which might have led to these heavily pressured bass not biting. I didnt think that using a dark natural color like watermelon or black/smoke would work because the water was so muddy...but correct me if I'm wrong? Anyway the only catch of the day was a 6 pound turtle my brother caught on bread while bluegill fishing..haha it was pretty cool. I guess the dog days of summer really are upon us. Will pond fishing become easier as it gets colder in Sept/Oct? I would assume so b/c the water cools off but I really dont know. Anyway it was nice to get out..kinda frustrating but me and dad are gonna go again next weekend so its all good. Maybe we'll try live minnows next weekend for those sluggish fish...
Rocky Gap St Park...dead sea
ogbudha  07/23/2008 - 06:22  Trip Reports  Impoundments  Roll Your Own    Hit Rocky Gap state park for a Md BASS fed tourney. Launched at 5am. I tossed buzzbaits until about 6:15am then switched to plastics. I landed 9 fish for the entire tourney and they were all fairly small. I had my limit of 5 keepers 35 minutes into the tourney on the buzzbait. The fish were small and I didnt think I had a chance to win. Well I was the only one to report a full limit for the entire tourney. I finished first. Ive fished many lakes in the st. this lake is horribly taken over with grass and the fishing is very tough. Only hit this lake in the spring or fall.......othe
Pond Trips 7/11-7/12
Steve826  07/13/2008 - 10:34  Trip Reports  Impoundments  Roll Your Own    My family went on a camping trip this weekend at one of the local state parks, and fished at the pond that is part of the park. It is a very small pond, so most of the fish are dinks but fun on light tackle. This pond is actually the first place I ever went fishing at, and the first place I caught a fish at. That was a year ago, we returned over the weekend with a year of experience with us. Friday night we fished 8-9:30 at night, I was dunking nightcrawlers and hooked two bass, both were dinks that threw the hook. My dad hooked a bass on a Hula Popper but it threw the hook as well. Our hooksets must not have been very good, I know I lost those 2 fish because I was using my ultralight rod w/ 4 lb test and the rod isnt very stiff so was struggling to get a good hookset. We returned Saturday night and fished from 7:45-9:15. I was dunking nightcrawlers again, I finally got a scrappy 10 inch bass. It was on 4 lb test so it was a fun fish. My dad and brother caught a few bluegills as well. I am not sure if there are any big fish in this pond, I have seen several large carp but I doubt there are any large bass in a pond this small but I really dont know. They are fun fish anyway especially on light tackle. Good luck to everyone else,
Fishin on the 4th
Steve826  07/04/2008 - 11:26  Trip Reports  Impoundments  Roll Your Own    Me and my dad headed over to a local pond this mornin to celebrate the holiday by doin some fishin. We brought 2 dozen nightcrawlers so we'd have our largemouth bait plus all our lures. Well it turned out that no matter what we did we could not get our worms past the bluegill. Every cast, literally, a bluegill would at least nibble down the worm. We caught and released a total of 9 bluegills. They werent big but they sure are fun to catch. I did get one hit right when we got there that hit like a freight train then let go..it was probably a bass but it didnt take the bait. Oh well, 9 bluegills isnt a bad day at all. We did try bass fishing for awhile, I was using a weightless rigged Watermelon Red Flake Senko and my dad was using a suspending jerkbait. Eventually I got frustrated because all the algae and slop got on the Senko so I just went back to bluegill fishing. Well we didnt get any bass but there's always next time, and like I said a day with 9 fish isnt bad no matter what kind of fish they were.
Took my own advice
TOOBIGTOYAK  07/04/2008 - 09:19  River  Roll Your Own    A couple weeks ago I responded to Steve826 and told him to hit the river and wade it, well I thought that sounds like fun. So Hunter and I hit a creek not too far away a feeder for the Monocacy. We started with top water and a litte swim bait. Top water got a few strikes but nothin else. We switched up a bit and I put on a small wooly hawg tail and started getting bites (still having trouble on that bait style with a hook up) I put a small chatter bait on and got hooked up with a small 12 inch chunker. We were getting ready to go and Hunter finally gets bit and lands.... you guessed it the biggest of the day.
Pond Trip 6/29
Steve826  06/29/2008 - 19:26  Trip Reports  Impoundments  Roll Your Own

Me and my dad headed over to the pond this afternoon from 2:30-4:15 during the rain showers. Within 5 minutes my dad got a nice 13 inch largemouth on a 5 inch white grub. I took a pic on his phone but it didnt turn out great cause you cant see the entire fish..I'll post it anyway. That turned out to be the only fish of the day. With the light rain and overcast skies, the conditions were perfect for topwaters. We tried Hula Poppers for an hour with no strikes. We even saw 2 or 3 bass jump like they were feeding on top but for some reason we didnt get any hits. I'm a little disapointed but it was nice to get out. Maybe I'll get a fish next time.

Bream Fishin 6/21
Steve826  06/21/2008 - 18:55  Trip Reports  Impoundments  Roll Your Own    Me and the family headed to the pond we've been fishing lately this evening for 2 hours. After the success we had last weekend catchin bream we decided to go after bream. I assumed they were still on their beds because they definitly were last weekend. Last weekend, they would attack ANYTHING that hit the water near their beds. Now, we had to work just to get bites and the bites we got werent solid, just little nibbles. My brother got 1 and I got 1, both on Berkley Gulp Maggots fished beneath a bobber. My dad got a blowup on his popper but didnt connect (he was bass fishing) I'm a little angry at myself for going after bluegills instead of bass fishing but the more I think about it, the more I realize that bluegills arent that easy to catch consistantly. They nibble and pick at your bait which can make it hard to hook up sometimes. I'm not gonna be able to get out next weekend (family are visiting) so the week after I'll have to get out and bass fish. There are some solid bass in this pond, the reason I was bream fishing is because I thought it would be constant action because I thought they'd be spawning..I was wrong. Oh well I had fun I didnt get skunked and I'll bass fish next time.
