Columbia, MD - 8/20/11
DanMarino  08/20/2011 - 22:18  Trip Tools  Essays  Impoundments    Today I was able to hit a local lake for a 1.5 hours in the afternoon with my daughter. It was a great time. The lake seemed in nice shape. There was weed growth in the shallower areas, but I was glad to see that it wasn't choked with weeds everywhere. We were the only people "on" the water. Some folks were fishing from shore, but didn't see any of them catching anything.

My daughter caught this largemouth bass on a gulp alive minnow.

Mrs. Marino and Daughter Marino Yak at Triadelphia
DanMarino  07/04/2011 - 21:53  Trip Reports  Impoundments    I was able to successfully get Mrs. Marino to kayak this evening on the local reservoir. Daughter Marino joined in on the fun. It is all part of the master plan to get Mrs. Marino involved in kayaking. So far, so good. She didn't want to paddle very far and was on the water about 50 minutes. She did a lot of resting. If the plan continues, this should help get Mrs. Marino on board to get a 3rd kayak this fall.

All photos taken by Daughter Marino. She was complaining about the whimpy zoom abilities of my waterproof camera.

Columbia Kayak Fishing
DanMarino  07/02/2011 - 21:32  Trip Reports  Impoundments    On Friday I took my buddy to a local lake in Columbia for some kayak fishing. It was his first time out ever in a kayak. We fished from 8:30AM-11:30AM. Fishing was tough. Lots more weeds growing than the last time I fished there. No surface activity. Any lure with a trebble hook got fouled in the weeds. I caught 3 largemouth bass, all on 4 inch worms. My buddy caught one largemouth on a worm as well. Fish were all about 12 inches long. Nobody else fishing the lake when we were there. Several people who were walking on the pathway around the lake were amazed that we were catching fish out of the place. Had a great mexican lunch afterwards with my buddy. The next time we get together we will hit the lake around 6:30PM.
Triadelphia With A Great Friend - 6/23/11
DanMarino  06/24/2011 - 09:44  Trip Reports  Impoundments    I took my buddy for a paddle Thursday evening for an hour on Triadelphia Reservoir. We put in around 7:30PM and took out around 8:30PM. The weather was fantastic and the reservoir beautiful.

My friend is not into fishing so this was mostly a paddling trip, but I decided to bring my ultralight rod and troll a beetle spin with a green pumpkin grub as we paddled along. In honor of CaptWalleye's father I threw a cast and took off trolling. While heading out from the launch on a branch arm of the reservoir and getting near the main reservoir, I had a hit. I reeled and saw a fish flopping at the end of the line, but it came off a few feet from the kayak. It looked like a crappie. Almost got one on that special cast Andy!
Tom Black - A visit to Triadelphia Reservoir
smalljaw  05/24/2011 - 05:01  Impoundments
My son and I visited Triadelphia Reservoir for the last hour of light on Sunday 5/22/11. I caught two largemouth bass this evening. Water clarity was better in the reservoir and the temperature was much warmer than three weeks ago. These are some terrible one handed pictures from my kayak. The fish took my soft plastic and I didn't see the line move at all. When I pulled up on the rod I felt resistance so I set the hook. The fish pulled me around and stripped a little drag. This is the second largest bass I've ever caught, at 19.5 inches. It had some of those strange black spots on it, but not near as many as the bass I caught in March. Neat fish, but lousy pictures.
Rocky Gorge Fish on Sunday 5/1/11
DanMarino  05/04/2011 - 08:17  Trip Reports  Impoundments    I went to Rocky Gorge in search of better water clarity and found it. It was raining so there was nobody else on the water except for a few guys fishing from shore. My son didn't want to get rained on, so he stayed home and I took the kayak.

I was fishing a worm and had a huge fish on. At first I thought I was snagged on a tree stump or rock, but the fish swam right towards my kayak, jumped and spun my kayak around to the left. It dove and I tried to adjust my drag and I lost tension on the fish and it was gone. It was a very big fish, at least as big as the 20 incher I caught a month ago.
I think i missed the spawn
plad99frc  04/28/2011 - 08:50  Fishing Reports  Impoundments    Fished one of my favorite frederick county lakes yesterday morning from about 8am till 1130. I was hoping to see some big females on the beds so i could do some sight fishing. I saw beds EVERYWHERE thoughout the shallows but none had fish on them. I probably caught 25 bass total along the shoreline below the beds in deeper water on a suspending jerk bait. Is it possible the recent spike in temperature caused the spawn? I didnt get the water temp but it felt alot warmer than the last time i was out in late march. Either way, the fish are active and definately turned on.
Triadelphia Skunk.
DanMarino  04/23/2011 - 19:09  Trip Reports  Impoundments    Fished Triadelphia this morning until about 2PM. Got skunked again. Water is still very stained and was 52 degrees. I threw crankbaits, a spinnerbait, X-raps, Husky Jerks, and a worm. The only fish activity observed was some carp jumping out of the water in the coves. I trolled deep, worked points, and fished around fallen trees and in the back of a couple of coves. Nothing going, but it was a nice day on the water. We even got dumped on by rain, but my rain gear worked and I stayed dry. I'll keep at em and hit Rocky Gorge next time. I'm alternating between the two reservoirs and basically getting skunked both places except for the one big fish I got a Triadelphia a month ago.
when the river is angry, remember the impoundments
space inwaders  04/19/2011 - 13:27  Trip Reports  Impoundments    We made a few attempts on the local river between high water events. The river was flowing strong and about 1' higher than normal but the clarity had improved to 2' or so. My lady found her first wally in over a year. A strong fighting 19-20 incher, the ones this size always feel bigger. The color and markings on this fish were beautiful. I had a few strikes but failed to keep them hooked. It was a good boost for her after a long wally dry spell and i was happy we'd found a few of them.
I tried the next evening and after several hours i hooked into something that felt pretty nice, i thought it was going to be a decent sized walleye, but ended up a channel cat about 22-23 inches.
