Walking on Maryland Water!
REB9  01/09/2010 - 18:03  Trip Reports  Essays  Impoundments    I ventured out of the house yesterday and today looking for some hard water to drill some holes in. GREENBRIAR State Park was my first destination. I found the lake to be iced over with 6 inches of solid ice. Right near the State Park boat dock, open water was noted fed from the spring seep.

With my trusty ice flasher in tow, I drilled several holes and commenced to jiggin with maggots and a small tear-drop jig. The lake's bluegills were willing and I iced a dozen or so on Friday. Nothing big, but they were fun to catch. No trout.

Saturday around 1030A, I headed up to Greenbriar to find bluebird skies and 25 degrees. The fish were in a funk and hard to catch. I iced one greenie about 11 inches and a few bluegill. No trout again....
Triadelphia?
DanMarino  09/17/2009 - 15:34  Fishing Forums and Chats  Impoundments    Hi Guys,

I've been fishing the Potomac pretty much exclusively since May, but I live just a mile away from Triadelphia Reservoir. I've never had much luck fishing at Triadelphia (especially in the hot summer weather), so I much prefer to hit the Potomac and actually catch fish.

With the approaching Fall weather, does anyone have any advice for fishing Triadelphia? Seems like no matter what I do I either get skunked or only catch one or two fish at Triadelphia. I'd love to change that. I've seen pictures of very big largemouth, smallmouth, pike, walleye, and striper that have been taken out of that reservoir. I'd love to learn how to consistently catch some fish there.
Pond Trips 7-10, 7-11
Steve826  07/12/2009 - 10:23  Trip Reports  Impoundments  Roll Your Own    This weekend my family went on our annual camping trip and I got to do a little fishing at the small pond in the campground. The bass fishing sucks...nothing bigger than like 12 inches in there...but it's fun to just dunk some bait and mess around. I caught 1 small bass and 11 bluegills. Nothing big but it was fun anyway. I did however experiment with a 5'6 L rod that I found in my garage on Friday before we left...I completely forgot I had it...it came with one of those Wal Mart spinning combos I got when I first started fishing. Well the 6730 President w/ 6 lb mono on the 5'6 L did an excellent job casting a 1/16 ounce popper. So if the 6'6 ML I bought from BPS doesn't do well casting 1/16 ounce lures, then I will return it and stick with the 5'6 L. I hope the 6'6 ML does work though cause I'd like the extra backbone that a 6'6 ML will have if I get a large fish on. Not to mention that I spent $45 on it :) Well anyway it was a fun weekend, always nice to get out and fish with the family even if the fish were smaller than desired.
More on the Vermont Trip (structure fishing)
TightLine  06/14/2009 - 10:47  Basics of Fishing Articles  Essays  Impoundments    As Duane and I were trying to locate the big fish that had apparently dissapeared, it got me thinking about the situation with which we were faced. When the wind and sun cooperated, the big fish were pulling up on the shallow flat just sunning themeselves. Beleive it or not, the fish were pre-spawners. We only saw one bed at the trophy lake, and all of the fish we caught were still full of eggs, and had no evidence of fanning the beds with their tails. These shallow fish were caught on poppers or twitch baits. They were in little pods of three to five fish together.

When conditions weren't quite as good, they seemed to be relating to the first or second drop off. A suspending jerk bait was deadly on these fish. There was emerging grass beginning at the first drop (6 ft) and continuing down to probably 15 ft. One day of our trip saw fish running baitfish (smelt, most likely) up against the first drop, usually a top water or slowly sinking bait (fluke) would do the trick on these actively feeding critters.

Pond Trip 9/18
Steve826  09/18/2008 - 20:34  Trip Reports  Impoundments  Roll Your Own    Went out this evening to the pond from 5:45-7:45. Only caught one fish, a small bluegill. It was kinda pathetic. Between me and my dad we tried six different lures: spinnerbaits, suspending jerks, texas rigged lizards, grubs, tubes, and hula poppers. Not really much to report. The water was very muddy and the ground was very wet. i think it flooded over a little with all those hurricane rains the last few weeks. Hopefully the fishin gets better soon, or I get better at it :) Ah well it was a nice night to be out, and it was good to be out for the first time in 3 weeks. Hey Capt, if you read this, i'm gonna be sending you a PM soon about a pond trip in the next couple of weeks.
Deep Creek Lake
ogbudha  09/11/2008 - 18:11  Trip Reports  Impoundments    Prefished for a tourney out of Deep Creek today. Got to run around in a 20 ft Bass Cat w/ a 250 Merc
Front was blowing through and it was about 55deg. when we launched at 6am
Ive been reading various reports on tough fishing and minimal results...it was tough fishing.
So here I found myself in a lake that has already started fall draw down ( down over 2 ft) and on a cold front day...= tough bite.

I flipped and skipped tubes ( my secret color) and had a 5 legal fish limit in a few hrs. I ended up with about a dozen fish today and the best five weighed in the 7.5 range. Defintely tough fishing, BUT a bag like that would actually score fairly well in a tourney considering how this lake has been fishing.

8/30- Another skunking...
Steve826  08/30/2008 - 22:02  Trip Reports  Impoundments  Roll Your Own    With all the stress of school starting back up and having company for Labor Day this weekend, we knew it would be difficult to go fish this weekend but we made time to go to Cunningham Falls Lake for a short time this evening. Fished the dam area and got absolutely nothing. Gulp nightcrawlers, Senkos, swimbaits, suspending jerks, spinnerbaits...not a tap. Only positive about the trip was catching a spinnerbait that must have gotten hung up on someones line...free lure :) Saw a ton of minnows nearby. Just couldnt get anything to bite. Very very frustrating. Its been almost 2 months since i've caught a bass. I really hope the fishing gets better soon...or I somehow start getting good at it :)
Pond Trip 8/23
Steve826  08/24/2008 - 13:13  Trip Reports  Impoundments  Roll Your Own    Fished a local pond last night with my dad from 7-8:30. Started out with a Senko fished in the dam area...no bites but my new reel casts a weightless senko GOOD. I'm having a little trouble with detecting Senko bites...what I usually do is cast out as far as possible, let it fall on a slack line, wait a few seconds. Then wind up the slack, and twitch the rod tip up a foot and let it fall on a slack line again. And I retrieve the senko doing that..but since the line is slack, how do I detect bites?

Well anyway after that...decided to use my zebco that i had rigged up with a small hook and bobber to catch some bream to use as bait. Within seconds I caught a little 4 incher so I rigged him up on a size 1 hook under a larger bobber. Had something big take a swipe at it...my bobber moved about 3 feet in 2 seconds...but I didnt connect. Spent the rest of the night catchin bream on my other rig just waiting for somethin to go after the bream i had under the bobber. The grass was HORRIBLE...i cant wait til it gets cooler out and can actually catch some bass..hopefully..I havent caught a bass since July :( Ahh well its ok I had fun catchin little bluegills anyway haha
