First post
hookedup  09/17/2008 - 17:13  Monocacy    Hello this is my first time posting. I have visited this site for a while now but never posted so here goes. I had planed on taking the boat out today, (smalljaw's old boat )but plans got scrapped. Instead I waded the monocacy. It turned out to be a great day with 10 smallies "hookedup". Two sunfish, one of which swallowed a treble hook whole. That was a fun surgical procedure. As far as I could tell it was ok when I released it. Countless number of misses and spit hooks. The fish were on today. All in all was a great day for me. All fish were caught on a crank.
Fishing Trip 6/14, kinda frustrating
Steve826  06/14/2008 - 14:00  Impoundments  Monocacy  Roll Your Own    Got up at 7 and was at the Monocacy at 8. We tried grubs in white and green pumpkin, and live nightcrawlers, with no bites. There are a ton of rocks at this spot so we got snagged so much we finally left. Headed over to a nearby area of the Monocacy and stayed for about 5 minutes, until we realized there was no way we could land a fish because the bank was so muddy with quicksand-like mud: I slipped in it and got stuck and it was hard to get out. Finally we headed over to the pond we've been fishing lately. Settled down and caught a few sunfish. I got 4 and my dad got 1. All were bluegills except the last one I caught which was a pumpkinseed (I think, it had orange spots on the side.) It was insane, the second you would toss your nightcrawler or corn into the pond, just a few feet off shore where you could see the bream sittin, they would bite. Half the time though, they would take your bait.
Valuable Lesson(s) Learned
Reel Lunker  06/08/2008 - 11:37  Friends of MDfishing.org  Monocacy  Roll Your Own    Went for a float yesterday down the monocacy. The day was beautiful, the water was muddy with zero visibility which made fishing tough. What makes fishing even tougher is when you lose both of your rods when you tip your kayak. When floating through a shallow swifter area, I paddled lazily through, got turned sideways and tipped my kayak. Being stupid, I had both of my rods sitting in the rod holder with no protection from losing them. I ended up losing both of my rods in waist deep water. Luckily all my other gear was secured to the kayak. I will try to go back in a few days when the water clears up to see if I can atleast find or feel around to hopefully salvage the rods, although I don't have my hopes up. Could turn out to be an expensive donation to the river. Lessons learned: Secure all fishing gear to the kayak, and make sure all rods are in and secured in their respective rod holders. Invest in some rod leashes. Finally, dont stop paddling through moving water. (Unfortunately, these are all lessons I have read about from other peoples misfortunes.)
Float after work
JRS  06/06/2008 - 12:33  Monocacy  Roll Your Own    Late post from Tuesday, June 3rd: A coworker and I floated the monocacy, starting around 4:30, finishing at 8:45. We spent a lot of time in rather unproductive water, so I am sure that it can be done effectively in half that time. We also had to wait out a few down-pours of rain. We threw rapalas, jointed rapalas, tiny 1 minus, and spinnerbaits and caught fish on each lure. Probably caught 40 fish total, half of which were sunfish/bluegill. Most smallies were sub 10" with a couple at 12" and a monster at......wait for it........19"!

additional notes: a few of the bass were greenies.
Any help?
BaconSlayer  06/06/2008 - 10:19  Friends of MDfishing.org  Monocacy  Roll Your Own    Has anyone had a chance to take a look at the mighty Monocacy? I was trying to do a float tomorrow but not sure what the water is like with the rain. With 100 degree temps tomorrow it would be nice to get out. Any help is greatly appreaciated!
Monocacy Sewage Spill- No Fishing Through May 28th
Steve826  05/17/2008 - 11:11  Monocacy    Just thought I'd give everyone a heads up about this:

from www.fredericknewspost.com/sections/news/display.htm?StoryID=75140

"Heavy rains this week caused roughly 180,000 gallons of untreated sewage water to leak into the Monocacy River near Metropolitan Court on Monday.
Frederick County government sent out a statement Friday afternoon notifying residents and informing them they should avoid direct contact with river water in the immediate area through May 28.

The location of the overflow did not affect any downstream drinking water intakes, according to the statement. The Maryland Department of the Environment and Frederick County Health Department were notified and an investigation into the cause of the overflow is continuing.
Monocacy last week - "The fish must be Italian ! "
Rande  05/15/2008 - 10:56  Monocacy

I just wanted to share my experience with fishing the Monocacy recently. I went out for the first time this season 2 weeks ago and was totally skunked. The river was high and the bank was very muddy – I tried a variety of lures and live worms without a nibble. I lost 3 lures (I prefer to say that I caught and released a 40 foot maple tree) – and then broke my rod.

Last Thursday, before the heavy rain, I went to try my luck again. Again I had no interest in the lures (mostly used a popper or floating worm) , but I did set a second rod out with some pepperoni from a Subway Spicy Italian sub. When I grabbed that rod and realized I had something, my son asked what I had caught. I replied that I don’t know, but “The fish must be Italian – he went for the pepperoni !”

It turned out to be a 20-inch Blue Catfish.

Monocacy Report 5/14
Steve826  05/14/2008 - 16:55  Trip Reports  Monocacy  Roll Your Own    Me and my dad headed to the Monocacy after school today for an hour. Within 5 minutes my dad hooked up with a nice bass on a Berkley Blade Dancer but it threw the hook before he could bring him to shore. No more hits after that. Other than the blade dancer, we fished a white 3 inch grub, a 3.5 inch Strike King Bleeding Tube in white, and a 3.5 inch Yamamoto Tube in Chartreuse w/ Black flake. The current was swift and the water was muddy. We knew the conditions would be tough because of the flood but we wanted to try and get out anyway. Good luck if you get out, and be careful.

What To Do?
Steve826  03/15/2008 - 18:30  Advanced Techniques  Monocacy  Roll Your Own    Ok everyone, I need some advice (again...) Spring break starts Wednesday. My dad has got his schedule clear for Thursday, and the Saturday before easter. Obviously, we're gonna get out and wet a line for the first time in a month or so. We've found some nice bank along the Monocacy to fish from, and we're thinking of trying it Thursday. Basically, I'm not sure what lures to try, and I'm just wondering if there will be fish around. According to the latest DNR report, the Potomac water temps are into the 40s..is that warm enough for there to be fish around? There is some cover around..logs, fallen trees, etc. One spot looked like it would be holding some nice fish, my main concern is the water temp. If anyone has any suggestions on lures based on the water temp, I'd appreciate them. I really feel bad for always asking for tips without being able to help anyone else out, I promise I'll try not to do that too much anymore :)
Skunked at Monocacy
Steve826  11/18/2007 - 20:39  Trip Reports  Monocacy  Roll Your Own    Went out early Sunday afternoon with my dad and his friend Greg to do some bank fishing on the Monocacy. Fished for 3 hours about. Nothing. Not even a bite, for any of us. My lack of experience didn't have anything to do with it either: Greg is very experienced and he had no more luck than me or Dad. Today was easily the worst fishing day I've had in a long time. I think it was because of the cold weather. Late fall is always tough fishing. We tried a variety of things: tubes, grubs, and Rapalas all failed. Then we tried for some catfish using shrimp with a sinker. Nothing. Since it's so late in the year we're probably gonna hang up the rods for the rest of the year-maybe one more trip if the weather permits. If not, we'll just read up on tips and techniques, and get out again next March when it starts to warm up, but who knows. Either way, it was nice gettin out on the water with Dad and Greg, despite not gettin anything.
