Open Invitation - MDfishing.org Gathering, Columbus Day October 10, 2005

Every year on Columbus Day Jeff and I float the Upper Potomac from Bond's Landing to Little Orleans. This year the MDfishing.org membership has exploded and we've been trying to find a way to get everyone together to finally meet in person and do a little fishing. We've decided to open this trip up to all who are interested. No real details yet, we're just trying to gauge interest.

Here's what I need right now.
1 - If you're interested in the float
2 - If you have a boat to fish from (kayak or canoe)
3 - If you have room for another in your boat or an extra vessel to share with someone who doesn't have a boat

62 degrees in January, but no bites.

It was 62 degrees out this January day and I was off from work. After talking to CaptWalleye on the phone at lunch, I had the itch and hit a small river near my house. I had a particular hole in mind to fish from shore. I fished from 3:45PM until 5:00 PM. Nice day out. A little breezy. No takers on a small tube, gulp alive minnow, or 3 inch worm.
I'll give it a try again this afternoon, but at a different spot.
A meeting of old and new on a river near you

My enthusiam for fishin' which has dwindled a bit,has finally returned.I've been talking to DanMarino and we finally got it together and went for it today.Met about 530 or so tranferred his yak into my truck and up the road we went.
We went to a place I'm fairly familiar with and proceeded to have a pretty good day.Of course it was suppose to rain and it did.Started off as foggy to light drizzle, and finally plain old raining.Never got really bad,and when the wind finally started blowing it was upstream and as we wrapped the day up blew downstream. So weather wise we had it good it was warm enough to be comfortable even though we were wet.

another way to tie your fluoro leader

I'd been reading up on knots to use for 100# + fluoro/mono lines when i found this tip. i decided to give it a try with my bass/walleye rod, and it might be better suited to the lighter stuff.

That rod has 4/15 yellow power pro and when fishing clear water i like to use a 12# fluoro leader. I've always used a double uni knot, but i've tried blood knots for the braid to fluoro connection too. I've never been happy with these connections due to low breaking strength when tying very different lines together in this case. They're a pain to tie too.

1. cut your length of fluoro leader
2. tie a overhand knot at the leading end of your fluoro leader

pre-irene - musky fishing

We knew it was going to be tough fishing, a big cold front had just passed through the region the day before. A change in weather, clear blue skies, bright warm sun, Irene was on the way.

We launched at 6am and began fishing large lures through 4 pm. We spent a good amount of time casting and a good amount of time trolling.

My fishing partner had one aggressive musky follow, but the fish turned away and didnt come back.

In a different area I had a musky follow my crankbait to the boat. The fish was well over 40 inches and thick. I first spotted it about 4' below the boat near the end of my retreive as the fish took a swipe at the lure. I continued into a figure 8 and the fish followed. On the 2nd turn of the large figure 8 the fish struck again then turned away. That was pretty exciting even if it didnt connect.

Patapsco Smallies - Photos Added

We got back from the beach and I was itching to get back to one of the local rivers. I only had 2 hours before sunset, so I headed to the lovely Patapsco only 23 minutes from home. I love the Potomac, but it's an hour drive....so it would have to wait for another day.

I decided to get adventurous and fish a new section of the river that I have never been to before. I was excited that the river was crystal clear, with nobody in sight.

I waded and fished about 100 yards of river. I found a couple of nice ripple areas, some crotch deep pools, and even a couple of hard ledges. I fished a tube and had a wonderful evening. I landed 8 smallies and 2 rock bass. All were healthy and fine specimens of aquatic life. One smallie had a throat full of crayfish. Most smallies were around 9 or 10 inches with the largest prize being a smallie around 12 inches. I'll be heading back to this spot frequently and investigating a little farther up and down river. I'll be adding a few photos in a few days.

Local Flow - Return Trip Looking for the Hog

Folks,

Last week I did some wading in my local river when my air conditioner busted. I was fortunate to catch a hog in a secluded pool that trip and last night I went back to see if I could find him/her again.

Beautiful evening with some fog coming off the river. Water levels were up some and a little stained due to the mid-afternoon rain shower.

I made my way to the pool and quickly caught a 11 inch fallfish that put up a decent fight. It was big enough to lip. It hit my safety pin spinner that had a jig and grub trailer. The fallfish was holding at the top of the pool right where the ripples feed into the slack water.

Smalljaw and I on a river near you

Last weekend,Smalljaw left me a message asking me to contact him.He had a plan and was looking for a partner in crime.I returned his call and we were to meet at 05:30 on Friday the 8th to implement his plan.

Friday morning arrived with him on time and I was three minutes late. The air temp was comfortable with over cast skies.PERFECT for fishin'.I loaded my gear in his boat and than we launched.

We motored up stream above the first major ledge and on up to the second one. That was where we would begin our morning of a slow drift downstream. We both tried fishin' soft plastic first.Jeff was campaigning a beaver on a sliderhead jig.I tried a 4" Senko rigged wacky style and hooked up immediately with the bottom. How a circle hook can get hung up like that I do not know but it did.I decided to rig another rod I had with a topwater lure and decided on a wakebait.I gave it a few cast and didn't like it so I decided to go back to the soft plastics.I rerigged with another circle hook and a jacks worm.

Air Conditioning Broke at Home - Go Wet Wading to Cool Off.

I got home and was hot because my home air conditioning unit just died, so I decided to fish the river near my home. I had fished this spot before and caught some bass. Anyway, tonight I took my ultralight rod and threw a safety pin style spinner with a curly tail grub on it. Same lure I had caught the crappies at Triadelphia a couple weeks ago when trolling in the kayak. I fished a pool below some ripples and had a couple of strikes where fish were getting the tail of the grub with no hookup. I threw the lure right at the undercut bank near two trees and had a heavy strike. I set the hook, but my drag was too loose so the fish quickly came off.

good trip 6/27

headed out to toss some lures monday evening and i chose an area that has been productive in the past.
I measured 72 degree water temps and there was approx 18 inches of visibility, flow was stabilizing.

I started off with various extra large lures and threw until my arms were tired. Then i tried a small jig on a light rod for a while. Nothing after two hours or so, but i did see a couple big boils and splashes out there...

I continued throwing large lures and suddenly i saw a huge boil where my lure was and felt a giant strike. This fish was big, and the lure was pretty far out there. After a tough fight on a 7' heavy casting rod and the 6500c3 drag at max, the fish still pulled drag with ease. But eventually it tired and was near shore. I was about to grab the net when it started rolling like a catfish would, but this was no catfish. I had a quick glance at the fish before the lure popped loose with bent 3/0 trebles. i have to think it was at least 40 inches, judging by what happened next.

MUSKALUNGEE!

i know this site has been real slow lately, but i also know all the old heads still check it from time to time. i figured i'd share this report.

i've been after ol' toothy himself this year, and have taken several trips in a great boat with an experienced partner, many close calls, and many missed fish.

As luck would have it, it all came together in "typical steve fashion" yesterday. i finally scored on my own, wading the river, and using less than adequate equipment!

Since using a big casting rod/reel combo in the brush on the banks is not easy, i tried to use an old saltwater MH 7' spinning rod i've had for years. I matched it with a penn captiva 4000 reel and 30lb braid. The reel is nice and smooth, and fairly heavy, in weight i mean, its twice as heavy as my shimano sedona 2500, so i figured it MIGHT be up to the job.

First time post but I wanted to let you know I fished Aquia Creek today. Lots of boats but managed 6 caught, 5 lost and my partner caught 3 and lost 3. 3 lbs was the biggest. Cinkos the trick. Main river was chocolate milk. Good luck Paul

Once upon a time.....on a river near you

This past Thursday,I met Muskalungee at the ramp and away we went.We traveled up river to a spot know as Doug's place.Named after a fellow fisherman and friend who was kind enough to share it with us.It's been a good spot too.Mike got his first "C" River Smallie there and I got my 2nd over the past couple years.

We anchored up and started working out with some SJBs,tubes, and spinnerbaits. The SBJ paid off pretty quick with a 16",and than the tube produced another 16.WE cast the SBJs down stream cranked them down than let the current work the lures for us as we slowly wound them in with different timed pauses.
