If you're a geek then you know what war driving is. If your not a geek then in its simplest terms it is the practice of driving around and connecting to insecure wireless network access points. If you want to know more then try this Google Search for a little more detail. What was I talking about, oh yeah, WAR YAKKING. Yes, it is true. I stumbled across this article today. Since I'm a geek I think that this is pretty neat stuff. A fair amount of the Engadget Website is very cool from a technical standpoint. Oh yeah, this is the kind of cool stuff that muskalungee does for a living that lucky dog.
Also this wonderful day gives me a chance to thank my Pop for always being there for me. My love for fishing and everything outdoors comes directly from the experiences I've shared with my Pop. I can still smell the crisp spring air on our opening day trips for trout, and if I listen real hard I can still hear the sound of leaves crumbling under my feet as we follow "Freckles" through the fields in search of pheasant.
A few of us got a note from Bruce Ingram asking to spread the news on this problem. Riversmallies.com has posted the details here so I won't bother to repost the whole note. PLEASE read the post in riversmallies it is very important information. If you live in VA, this area, or fish these rivers then the suggestion is that you "will write some angry letters or e-mails to the politicians in that area". I know that Bruce and the people he is working with on this will greatly appreciate it.

Update 2004-06-18: Roscoe's office says send then letters. See more for details. I found an article out of Cumberland that has some good information in it. Read it and you'll find out that it looks like the Maryland Geological Survey is not providing their share (30%) any more. The next step is to talk to Jim Jeffries, field office chief for USGS in LaVale, to get more detail on where they are heading. From the Frederick News Post on Saturday June 13...Funds amounting to $166,000 supporting 3 gauges and a flood control levee have been cut from the FY '05 Federal Budget. The Wills Creek, Hancock, and Paw Paw gauges and the levee near Cumberland will be lost if something isn't done. My U.S. Rep. Dr. Roscoe Bartlett calls the move "penny-wise and pound foolish." There is not much time left as the Federal Fiscal Year 2005 starts October 1, 2004.
With tight government funding everywhere Maryland Governer Robert J. Ehrlich Jr. found a way to get $11.9 million in grants and funding approved for state waterway projects. In particular 1) for expanded parking and upgraded access to the public ramp at Lander and 2) for a new boat ramp to replace the existing ramp at Point of Rocks (Maryland side). If you recall, there was a grass roots effort to do something about the Lander access earlier this year Lander Access.I wonder what other goodies we might be able to expect from this. Who can find out for us? OK, I couldn't stand to wait so a quick Google revealed this list for your viewing pleasure.
Update: Ladies and Gentlemen we have a Winner! See this post for the GOOD NEWS! One of our favorite websites www.riversmallies.com seems like it may about to change dramatically. As per this post by Brian King:
"I don't want there to be any misconceptions about my original post concerning the future of the site. The post was not a result of any particular topic or the fact that people disagree. People have been doing that since day one and there have been plenty of hot topics.
As the site grows it is taking up more of my time. I've reached a threshold as to how much time I am willing to spend tied to the computer.
I will go into more detail in the near future. I just want to make it clear that "bickering" and controversial topics are not the reason for my post."
I wonder what's going to happen?
Well we've got a new look for the new year. We've also got a clear mission now and we are excited about it. You can read about our new mission on the about page.
I got off work this afternoon, and have been contemplating taking my yak up to the north branch of the Patapsco River. This is the one that drains from Liberty reservior.I should have gone yesterday (more water flow),but wussed out.Today,I went for it.
Packed it up and took off.To my pleasure, when I arrived I found the conditions to be worthy of a try.I knew I'd have to wade alittle and drag, but I was up for adventure.Just to get started I waded and pulled, than hopped on and took off.(I forgot my lifevest got to bring my average up better than fifty/fifty)The current was'nt too bad,and the water clear. It was beautiful. It turned out that I only had to get out two more times. There are a couple long pools that make you just stare and wonder. It really didn't take long to get there, and worth the effort.
