Farm Pond 5-16 (click Read More to see pic)
Steve826  05/16/2009 - 11:48  Trip Reports  Farm Pond  Roll Your Own    This morning my dad and I went fishing at a farm pond that we have access to. My dad did some work for the land owner so they gave us permission to fish here. We fished for around 3 hours from 8:30-11:30. On my first cast I hooked a decent bluegill on a 1/16 ounce Floating Rapala in silver, but he threw the hook. A few minutes later another bite and I brought my first fish of 2009 to hand. It was a bluegill about 8 inches long. He swallowed one of the treble hooks though and we could not get it out so we had to release the fish with the hook stuck in its throat. It did however swim off and we didn't see it splash on the surface so I think it survived. Anyway over the next three hours we caught and released 10 fish, a new record for us. We each got 5. Only 4 total were largemouth, the rest were BIG bluegills. The average bluegill was about 8 inches. The largemouth were all pretty small, in the 9-12 inch range. Not too big I know but it was fun. But there was a real lunker waiting for me at the end of the day. I caught this citation size bluegill at 11:15 AM. About 11 inches long and I would guess about 1.5 pounds. A lot of fun, I was really excited since its my NPB for bluegill.

ENJOYABLE MORNING FISHING!
jackson  05/09/2009 - 04:22  Friends of MDfishing.org  Black Hills    Finally met and fished with a "MDfishing" member, Tightline! And a very enjoyable outing it was! Good conversation, and reminiscing of common "fishing holes" we both had visited in the past. This was the first time I've ever met and fished with anyone in the "blind". Boy have I been missing out on some good experiences! As it was my worst fears came true! The fish would not cooperate. They are in what I call the "FUNK"! With all the rain, 10 days of continuously cloudy weather, and temps. all over the charts, these lake fish are all screwed up. However, I believe what we were experiencing as we were on the water, was a influx of males moving to the shallows and stumps fanning out beds.
Trophy Rockfish!
jackson  05/07/2009 - 05:39  Trip Reports

Just thought I'd share a couple pics. of my son, Jason, and his wife, Kari with couple trophies caught last week. Largest 47" @38#'s and 43" @ 28#'s. They also had 4 others right at 40"! (have to wait for Muskalungee to upload) My son, Daughter-in-law, and Granddaughter have lived on eastern shore for about 5 years. They enjoy it all, fishing, crabbing, and especially, deer, turkey, and waterfowl hunting. He also has his own successful taxidermy business, http://www.oakcreektaxidermy.com. I do not believe they will ever come back to the west side of the bridge!

HardCore ON SHORE vol 2-- Fishing the flood 5/6/09- soft-finned friends.
space inwaders  05/06/2009 - 22:48    i had a day off and after a morning and afternoon of work on the house i wanted to see what flood stage looks like on the potomac.

At point of rocks the water got up to 18 feet and at hancock the water was at 22 feet or so!

I tried to think of some big shoreline features that would create a current break or slack water.

When i got there, the water was higher than i had imagined, the areas i had in mind were well underwater, but there was an area worth fishing. I could see fish getting stuck there or staying there a big back eddy. No luck though. I moved on.

HardCore ON SHORE vol 1-- 5/2/09 on the smaller river
space inwaders  05/06/2009 - 08:48  Trip Reports    I tried a spot on a smaller local river, wondered if the eyes may lurk there, a friend said he caught one there...

First try, i fished the east side of the shoreline, it was pretty shallow and fast current, i couldn't see where he may have gotten one in that area, we were quickly soaked with poor rain gear. Went back a few days later fished the west side of the river, and this looked more like the right kind of water. Deep and heavy current, a back eddy along shore downstream of a rock outcropping, and current breaks behind big obstacles in mid river.

The water was a little high, a little stained, low 60s. My normal suspending jerk baits wouldn't work well in the heavy current, they would spin and/or come to the surface or just not go deep enough. Annie got a 10" smallmouth on a bright green powergrub on a 1/8 oz jig letting it wash with the current. I eventually got one on a more natural shad color soft plastic w/ curly tail bouncing with a 5/8 oz jig. Then switched to a brown with bright green tail 3" powergrub and bounced the bottom with one of my custom flat head 1/4 oz jigs that make the bait sit about 45 degrees off the bottom. Soon i got a nice tick on the line and set the hook to feel something BIG.

Liberty - Saturday April 25
TightLine  04/28/2009 - 14:19  Trip Reports  Liberty  Roll Your Own    Took my first shot this year and put the boat in the water. Fished from 8:30-3:30, and caught one 13" Large Mouth. He was pretty spunky, and left the water four times, so I got my money's worth out of the little guy. Felt great to get back out, and feel something pulsating on the end of the line. I caught him on a beaver hut on a small Texas rigged worm.

The lake is still down about four feet, I'd guess, with water temps 56-59 degrees. Parts of the main lake were warmer than back in the coves...but with all the warm temps and SW winds lately, I'm sure that has changed by now.

Jon Boat vs. Pelican/Bass Hunter style boat
Steve826  04/27/2009 - 20:13  Boating    Ok guys, here goes.

So back in September as some of you probably remember I posted on here discussing options for buying a boat. I had originally intended on a small Pelican style jon boat until the advice I got here made me decide on a canoe. Well...I've thought it over for the last several months and I decided I don't want the canoe anymore. I really just want the stability that a jon boat brings. I talked it over with my parents and we agreed that if I wait til I graduate high school in 2 years they will help me pay for it as a graduation present. I know there is no way I could cartop it so when I get my license and get to pick out a used vehicle, its definitely gonna be a truck so I could put a jon boat in the back of it. I know it's not for two more years but obviously I'm really thrilled at the idea of having a boat instead of being tied to the shore. So I've been researching different boats. Now, what I'm wondering is, which is better: a true riveted jon boat, i.e. a Lowe 1236 such as this:
STILL NO SOW'S!!

By this time I usually have at least one 5#er or better, but not the case so far! I did have what I believe was one of at least five pounds last week but came unbuttoned.
