Monocacy Wet Wade 8-15-09
Steve826  08/15/2009 - 12:05  Trip Reports  Monocacy  Roll Your Own    Wet waded the Monocacy this morning with my dad from 8 to 11:30. Fishing was very slow. My dad caught 1 small smallmouth and I caught 2 small bluegills. The stretch we fished had some decent looking water but we just couldn't seem to get bit? The water felt nice though, we waded up to about mid-thigh level with no problems. Stumbled around a bit on some flat rocks but nothing too bad. Well while we didn't catch much of anything at least we kept cool in the river and there's always next time I suppose. Just thought I'd share.
sat august 1st
space inwaders  08/07/2009 - 22:33    I've still been at it, but luck has been sparse. However, saturday the 1st was an exceptionally good day on the water!

Little bit of rain the night before, river was up about 6", stained in some areas.

I fished my new good luck area, using a 4" chartruse grub on a 1/8oz and later 1/16 oz jig heads. I fished A couple hours before dark til dark.

After a what felt like a while- some life on the line, just a slight tick. The stubborn nose diving, and slow tail pulsation felt like a wally. A pretty 18"er or so was to blame.

I kept at it and hooked and lost another that felt a little bigger. Then a channel cat about 15" jumped on, and fought really well.
Potomac
DanMarino  08/03/2009 - 07:17  Trip Reports  Potomac    Folks, I've been fishing the Montgomery County sections of the Potomac most weekends lately with my 11 year old son. Grass and algae is becoming a problem and fouling up our crankbaits. Been fishing a lot of tubes and flukes lately. Finally started catching fish on Gulp Alive black shad flukes that were deadsticked. Caught the most fish on Saturday using a green pumpking grup in 2-3 feet of water above a fast moving riffle area. All fish were small. Biggest smallies were only in the 12-13 inch range. Plenty of fish out there, but no big ones landed.
Saying hello- I've relocated
Reel Lunker  07/27/2009 - 16:59  Friends of MDfishing.org  Roll Your Own    Thought I would stop in and say hello. I still check the site out from time to time, as I I would rather look at fishing information than work sometimes.

As my brother stated in his post about looking for a boat I have relocated to the West Coast (San Francisco) for work. The fishing has been slow so far as I have been busy getting settled into a new city and travelling with work but hopefully starts to pick up. The emphasis around here seems to be fishing the bay and ocean for larger saltwater species and not so much freshwater, although maybe I need to venture out further. Seems like to get into some good largemouth and smallmouth fishing I need to hit up some of the reservoirs which seem to be about 2-3 hours away, and are best fished with a boat which I lack and have no place to keep one if I did.
Sunday
oppiey  07/20/2009 - 14:09  Roll Your Own    I got out a little yesterday on my little river on a stretch that I don’t think gets fished much. At around 330pm Joe and I left the house to get a little fishing in but was not sure where I was going. On 695 at 70 I was thinking Point of Rocks, but on second thought decided to go north. Headed out 140 thinking about river crossings I picked one that I thought didn’t get a lot of pressure.
We pulled the Pickup along the bank, unload the yak and canoe. River was low so the trip ended up being a wade and paddle. Only had to wade a 100 yards or so then we could paddle. The first mile or so, nothing, not even a bite. Looking up river I was seeing a lot of Herons and was wondering if they may have over fished the area. We had a red fox follow us for ten minutes or so, then he over took us along the bank while he kept a close watch on us. We saw a deer on a high back watching us, then the bank gave way and the deer came crashing down into the river for a swim. Still no fish. I pulled up on shore and stated to think about what I was doing wrong, should have had some fish by now.
Fishing Boat/ Long time No Post
BaconSlayer  07/17/2009 - 10:19  Roll Your Own    Hello,

Its been a while since I have posted. My fishing buddy (Little Brother) had decided to take a job transfer to San Francisco so I havent been able to find anyone to get out much. However, I was on the potomac rtiver the other day and I have decided to start looking for a boat for the river and wanted to see if anyone is looking to sell one. I am looking for a 16 to 18 foot tracker / G3/ Lowe style boat for the potomac river. If anyone knows of anyone selling one I would be happy to take a look at it. I also have a question. I have seen a lot on the web that have regular prop propellers and not many with jet motors.
Pond Trips 7-10, 7-11
Steve826  07/12/2009 - 10:23  Trip Reports  Impoundments  Roll Your Own    This weekend my family went on our annual camping trip and I got to do a little fishing at the small pond in the campground. The bass fishing sucks...nothing bigger than like 12 inches in there...but it's fun to just dunk some bait and mess around. I caught 1 small bass and 11 bluegills. Nothing big but it was fun anyway. I did however experiment with a 5'6 L rod that I found in my garage on Friday before we left...I completely forgot I had it...it came with one of those Wal Mart spinning combos I got when I first started fishing. Well the 6730 President w/ 6 lb mono on the 5'6 L did an excellent job casting a 1/16 ounce popper. So if the 6'6 ML I bought from BPS doesn't do well casting 1/16 ounce lures, then I will return it and stick with the 5'6 L. I hope the 6'6 ML does work though cause I'd like the extra backbone that a 6'6 ML will have if I get a large fish on. Not to mention that I spent $45 on it :) Well anyway it was a fun weekend, always nice to get out and fish with the family even if the fish were smaller than desired.
daylight wallys
space inwaders  07/10/2009 - 20:46  Potomac  Roll Your Own    i've been going alot lately with not alot of fish. Tons of people, everywhere I go, and that means poor fishing, but they love being out maybe almost as much as i do=)

I lucked into a quick evening trip on a jet a week ago or so, with Dan of www.fish&floatadventures.com, besides scoping out a few areas for an upcoming client, Dan really wanted to show me a couple areas i could hit from the shoreline and the crazy idea was wallys in the light of day.

We checked out a few places, many of which i had hiked to before, or had been meaning to. The one very productive area was interesting because the bank and bottom seemed muddy, 3-5' deep on the graph in the boat. Really not where you'd expect to find em.
Question About Using Small Lures
Steve826  07/08/2009 - 14:29    I've been trying to find the best setup to use for small lures, basically anything lighter than 1/8 in size. I've tried using 1/16 floating Rapalas for panfish in ponds and they work but I have trouble casting them far. The rod I am using is a 6 ft BPS Medium, and the reel is a Pflueger President 6730X. I have 6 lb Trilene XL on there and I can get a good cast using a live bait rig w/ bobber and split shot, but not with small lures. It can be tedious using live bait for panfish so I'd like to use small lures but I just can't seem to get good casts. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? Mike suggested I use 10/2 Powerpro...any thoughts on this? Could it be the rod length, maybe I should try a 6 ft or 6'6 Medium Light, instead of 6' medium? Or for light lures should I downsize the reel to a President 6725X, and use the same rod? I was going to try 4 lb Trilene XL on the spare spool but Fox's was all out of it when I went the other day. So I'm trying to find an alternate solution, but if you guys think that 4 lb mono is the answer then I will wait until they re-stock.
