Ok! Let's get it started for the new year
Captwalleye  01/07/2006 - 20:43  Trip Reports  Impoundments    Anybody been out yet? I've hit that pond three times, and the lake once since the new year started. The pond is hot as far as catching fish. They aren't giants, but their fish, and fun to catch. My
score is 26 Largemouth so far.All but one on some sort of jig.The oddball was on a suspending jerkbait. They're all healthy and pulled my line admirably.
The lake is being stingy.Just getting excercise walking in and out,
and cold when it gets dark.I may go there tomorrow evening, and see what happens.Sooner or later,we'll meet. The fish and I,that is.
I've got a couple other ponds to check out and will do so soon. The one has the potential for lunkers. It's where I usually drag a five lb plus out of in the spring. The cattails get so bad there I only fool with it in the spring.I need to do a trim job on those cattails. If it freezes up real good I'll do a major number of a trim job. That would make that place a pleasure to visit.
I guess it's really time to knuckle down and seriously try to fish
a river for the mystical Winter Smallmouth.I can't say I've ever caught one out of the Potomac during the winter. That's got to change.I've got an agenda, and It's time to get with it.
How about you all? Been fishing yet? Come on now.You can't catch if you don't go.That first strike of the year is just waiting for you.Let's go!
Been out?
HookUp  01/24/2006 - 12:23    Been on four all day floats, two jon boat rides, and a couple wading local tribs.

Had one EPIC day a few weeks ago due to the warming trend. Big fish and Numbers day. Had two skunking's too.

Sometimes the fish win, sometimes I do!

Nothing beats dumb luck

Winter Smallies
Dee Tee  01/09/2006 - 08:25    Cap't:

I was out in the kayak on the Potomac at Point of Rocks Saturday. Again not fishing, but I did see quite a few rising fish while I was out there. The river is a bit high and stained, but fishable. With all of this warm weather, I don't think a winter smallie would prove impossible. Go for it!

Going for it!
Captwalleye  01/12/2006 - 19:01    Monday I'm off from work, and going for it.Got a spot to try,and if that don't work I'll go up below Dam 4 or down to Dickerson.I'm going fishing !

1/8/06 Update
Captwalleye  01/08/2006 - 19:25    Hit the same pond today. The Largemouth Bass total goes up two more. That makes 28 landed and released. The Crappie were the heavy hitters for today.I landed nine total, and lost half that many more.
Most came on a small suspending jerkbait.I caught three on consectuetive casts. All but one were keepers. They were looking real good.I even got a decent Bluegill on that jerkbait.I was campaigning the Float n Fly too,and it worked on the Crappie.I spent two and a half hours there, and enjoyed every minute.
I went up the lake too.I arrived about 3:30,and left at 5:30.I caught absolutely nothing except the bottom and lost my last chartruese craft hair jig. That hurts! That color has been the dominant color for catching everthing in that pond. The lake is still full, and cold to the touch. The wind was blowing from the wrong direction, and I feel that had something to do with the lack of action. We'll see what happens tomorrow.....

1/9/06 A tough one,but 60 degrees outside.
Captwalleye  01/10/2006 - 06:13    I hit the same pond again for two hours.I got spanked compared to the day before.I managed four Largemouth Bass, and really had to work for them. The Crappie move around and I guess that's just what they did.Next time maybe... I'll try antoher pond, and change my luck.

Whoa! That was close.... almost got skunked!
Captwalleye  01/10/2006 - 19:26    Once again,I hit the same pond. When I left the house it was 50.3 degrees out.I arrived and there was another fellow there.A friend of mine, Bob Erbb.He had been there awhile, and only had a few taps on a Yum Crawdad he was fishing. We talked a bit and kept fishing.I managed to hook and land one Bass.I had another on and it came to the top and
threw the jig.I don't know what's going on but all of a sudden the fish have developed lockjaw. If I go tomorrow I'm going to try somewhere. The count is 33 dinks time to go for the gusto.

1/12/06 The fishing show and back to the pond
Captwalleye  01/12/2006 - 18:57    I bailed out of work early and went to the Bass Show at Timonium.I was not impressed by anything I saw.I talked for a bit with a guy there with the yaks.I cuised the lures, and scarfed up on some more Sweet Beavers, and got some hair jigs made from tin.I'll experiment with them directly.I just didn't see anything out of the ordinary or of real interest. To each his own.
I rolled out of there and headed home grabbed my stuff and went to the pond.I found a lure I've had hidden away and tried it out.The results were immediate.I fished it with and without a bobber. My total was eight Largemouth Bass, two small Crappie, and three small Bluegill.
I noticed quite a bit of change going on too. There were fish rising to the top,I saw a bat,and there were two long tailed hawk being sort of friendly.I know it's being push, but it looks like spring is trying
make the scene. That don't hurt my feeling at all.Come on!
I'm seriously planning on hitting the Potomac Monday since I have the day off.I'm setting sail too.I want that January Smallouth real bad,and going to start fishing for it.Hopefully, all will cooperate and go as planned. We'll see.....

You're Killing me Capt
smalljaw  01/15/2006 - 08:26    Getting out AND getting fish!! Put me in with that anti cold weather crowd. I have the desire just not the metabolism and the fortitude to brave the elements at this point. Sorry to hear about the Baltimore show. It must be getting too commercial at this point. Used to be that you could come across some good deals or just something new that you had to try. I'll be out when it gets warm again. Keep up the hard work Capt. most of us are living vicariously through you at this point.

Smalljaw in exile

I'm sharing the trials and tribulations of early season fish
Captwalleye  01/15/2006 - 11:46    Hang in there, you'll be back soon. It's still spotty at times.Scale down in size, and slow down the presentation.I'm after anything I can get to bite.I went to Liberty last night. It was terrible.Real windy, and white caps rolling down the lake.Just too much to fish in.
I'm going to try something extraordinary tomorrow. If I succeed you'll probably hear me even way up there in NY.
I have you covered until you can return.Than it's up to you to get out there and have at them.
