On the board.........
muskalungee  04/03/2005 - 15:47  Trip Reports  Impoundments    Smalljaw and I got out yesterday afterall. We almost threw in the towel after some AM lightening blew thru in the morning, but we decided to give a shot around 1PM. That timing ended up working out just right b/c the weather broke about the time we headed out.

When we arrived at Black Hills we had the place to ourselves. The water was getting real muddy around the put in so we headed to back of the lake. We found some more muddy water but the water temps were about 51 degrees, so we tossed some spinners for a few minutes....and then it happened. As I casted into this nice little spot between some logs my spinnerbait struck something in the boat. Then as my reflex kicked in, I jerked my rod and it smacked jeff (or his seat). I don't know what exactly happened next but before I could react my customized (shortened) rod and shimano curado went KER-PLUNK! I was powerless as I watched it decend into the muddy water. I was kind of in shock. I fished around for it for a couple of minutes and then I just gave up and considered it a donation.

I had a lizzard florida rigged with a rattle all setup so I just picked up that rod and tossed my lizard back towards to the log. BANG! First cast, big hit, and I set the hook. "ZIIIIIP" was the noise it made. Oh no, when I respooled my rod the night before I never reset the drag!! So I turned the handle on my Curado100B and set the hook again. "ZIIIIIP" Same deal. Turned it a bunch more times and she was still there. Somehow the 3rd time was the charm and I set the hook and horsed her in. It ended up being a nice Largemouth, (~2.5+ lbs) a fat little sucker.

It was a good afternoon on the water and besides the other small problems of me dropping my sunglasses in the water, and me hitting a stump with the trolling motor (and bending it). There were no major issues. :) As always, we had a blast. And I finally got my first fish of the year!!!

Whoa! What a trip
Captwalleye  04/03/2005 - 18:03    Man,you had quite a variety of problems.I'm sorry to hear you lost your reel. Are you going to try to go back and fish for it later? I would.
The way I see it,you've already had all your misfortunes for this year in one trip. You'll be on a roll from here on out.
Congratulations,on the lunker Largemouth(So far)for the gang that post here.I'll try to give you some compettition, just as soon as I figure out what's going on at my pond.
Question? What was Mr.Smalljaw doing while you were fishing? You didn't mention his activities. Was he just along for the ride or what?
Inquiring minds want to know.

He was just enjoying the ride...
muskalungee  04/03/2005 - 18:12    Smalljaw was just along for the ride. I kept him quite entertained so he didn't really have time to concentrate on fishing. :)

Actually, we spent a lot of time analyzing the sonar on this trip. We typically go after visible structure on that lake, but we couldn't do that under these conditions. This trip was yet another learning experience for us.

Along for the ride...
smalljaw  04/04/2005 - 20:14    about sums it up. I didn't get a fish which was only mildly disappointing given all of the other entertainment that was provided for the day. It was nice that the rain quit for the exact amount of time that we were on the water. Got a little work to do on the trolling motor but I don't think that it is beyond repair. I had a great time out there none-the-less. Mike's fish was a real fat horse of a fish. That pic really doesn't do it the justice it deserves. Nice work Muskalungee!! You're on the board.

Phil, you need to get with the program. We're gonna make sure you get your first before the month is out :)

TL, you have absolutely no excuse in my book. Given your location you should have been on the board a while ago.

Cap, I know where that pole is!!! I might go back and get it myself. I've already dredged one outfit out of the little pond by my house so the whole process is pretty familiar to me now.

Looks like it's shaping up to be a pretty nice week for us. Rivers won't be fishable but the lakes and their greenies ought to be prime by the end of the week.

Go get'em boys!!
