Got'r Did
smalljaw  03/18/2005 - 22:45  Trip Reports  Monocacy
I am on the board for 2005! Great day to be off work and ON the water. Finally broke free and cast off from shore about 2:30 this afternoon. Within a half hour I was reaching down to lip a chunky 14 incher. Fought like a cat, she stayed down and I was sure that was what it was. I am somewhat famous for pulling cats out of smallie waters. Anyway I was happy to see that little beauty come to hand and get its picture took. Water temps were around 46 degrees everywhere I checked. Turtles were out sunning on the logs, beavers doing their thing, ducks everywhere. Just amazing. I continued to fish for another couple of hours with no more luck.

Hey Mike, I know where a Muskalungeeee lives. I saw about a 30" Muskalungeeeee right under my boat that intially scared the crap out of me. I got a thing about wildlife getting too close to me you know. Just swam right along under my boat for about 30' and then drifted off into the depths. VERY COOL.
Pretty Fish
TightLine  03/23/2005 - 12:33    That's a nice beggining to the fishing season. I'll be back out prodding Liberty in the days to come, and hopefully will have something to show for it. GREAT FISH! Keep 'em comin'

Thanks TL...
smalljaw  03/24/2005 - 19:50    I was really glad to get that monkey off of my back. Too bad the weather turned south on us this week otherwise I think every one of us would be on the board by the end of this coming weekend. Supposed to be a REAL FINE one next weekend and I'm already working on the old lady to let me get out for a few hours. A bundle of honey-do's this weekend and there will be no stopping me when the weather clears.

Uh oh.
muskalungee  03/21/2005 - 19:24    Awesome! Way to go brother! I'm looking forward to the details on that Muskalungeeeeeeeee......he's in my river!! :) You're on the board now, and in March of all months!

I got out to Walmart today and picked up my license. Then my wife and I took the baby down to the pond to see the geese. I just happened to have my rod in the truck (coincidence?) so I figured I'd toss a couple in. My fingers were about frozen after a few minutes but it felt real good to wet a line. It's only a matter of time now.

One thing that was pretty strange was that there was a lot of alge on the bottom of the pond and my spinner kept getting all mucked up. I thought that was weird for this time of the year. Anybody think that is weird?

Muskalungeeee!

True
muskalungee  03/22/2005 - 10:36    I guess you have a point. It is your river Phil, you know it better then any of us. Can I please borrow it again this year? :) Not only are you nice enough to let me use it, but you show me all (err some) of the good spots. :)

It's starting to feel like spring out there. Birds chirping up a storm, squirrels everywhere, grass turning green. Oh man I can't wait!

Muskalungeeeeeeee!

Monocacy
ShawnLittle  03/21/2005 - 16:29    Wow, I've been fishing the Monocacy for about 5 years now and I never go before june because I thought the water was too cold. That smallie has opened my eyes in a whole new way about the best river in maryland (IMO)!!!!!!!!!

See?
Captwalleye  03/19/2005 - 06:25    What did I tell you? You started out with the first Smallie of the year for the whole gang.Congratulations!
I hit the pond yesterday evening, and fished about two hours. The score was five small largemouth, two bluegill, and one crappie.I had to work for them too.I even caught a bass on one of those "have to get a loan" to pay for it LuckyCraft Pointers.I'm still a little disappointed in that lure.It did rest in not quite as bad a tail down position.I guess the water tempeture really has an effect.I measured it at 51.3 at the shore line.
I was suppose to make my shake down run today. That has got to be rescheduled till tomorrow.I'm going fishing with my daughter today. At least that's what the plan is.You know how those girls can change their minds.I'll take that chance.
I have a question.I scored a couple Bandit "Footloose" crank baits.
The package says they run 0-1" deep. The one I tried yesterday stayed on the surface.I had to kick it into warp speed to get it to go below the surface at all.Am I missing something here,or just dense, period If anyone would care to enlighten me,please do.I'd appreciate it.Ya know how those old folk are.
Mister Muskalungeeee,Were waiting....

I did not realize
smalljaw  03/19/2005 - 07:31    that was the first one for the whole gang. I feel a little bit better now. I got him on a guess what? LuckyCraft Pointer for which I took a second mortgage out on the house to purchase a few weeks back :) Sounds like you had a pretty decent day. Pond temp at 51.3 is getting up there. It makes sense that you are having that much success given those water temps. I have noticed the same effect with the footloose also. I bought that and a 100 series and I fish the 100 series more because it gets down better. I think that I had Mike buy me a 200 a week or so back but it may have been another 100, can't remember. I fished crankbaits most of the day yesterday and by the end realized that I have a new fascination with them.

Have fun with your daughter today. I know that you know that those times are the ones that you'll really remember later in life. Take the camera, go get some fish, have some laughs and enjoy yourselves.

Ok! Mister Modest
Captwalleye  03/20/2005 - 06:39    You're not fooling me.You had a agenda and you met it.Once again,
Congratulations! That's a nice fish, and caught on a lure with potential.I'm going to keep fiddling with mine.I'm still not really satisfied with how it works.Let that water temp get up some more and let's see how fluid the action is when you work it.Those Bandits have a potential scenario too.It just has to get warmer for that.
I guess my daughter got into something better to do,and we didn't hook up,maybe next time.I wound up going to the pond. That was tough
there.I caught one small Largemouth, and one bluegill. They took a 1/16oz duck feather jig.I tried a beetlespin, husky jerk, and even got creative and assembled a carolina rigged french fry.I got one tap on that and that was all she wrote.I have no idea what happened there,
unless someone got there earlier and sore mouthed everything.
I got disgusted with that and decided to go home and regroup.I swapped rods, and headed for the bottom of Liberty Dam.There is just alittle water flowing over.I had planned on floating/wading up there to fish the pool there, but thought I had a better deal come up.That fizzled out.Anyway,I threw a spinner bait,Brewers gurb, and my good old
swimbait.Guess what produced? Of course,the swimbait.I got a tap,and than ka thump,and than instant loaded fishing rod.It was a 18 1/4"
walleye. It was doing some pulling too.No drag squalling but rod pulsing. The water is still pretty cold, and it was decked out in it's
finest array of markings. The water is clear, and I watched it swim along as I led it to where I could get down to it.I landed, photoed, and
released it.Once April gets here,I'm going to start keeping them.Their
too good to eat.
I was going to make the long walk this morning before daylight to fish my "Honeyhole",but it was raining. So I wussed out.If it clears off this evening I may go for it than. We'll see.

Way to go
oppiey  03/20/2005 - 00:11    Jeff, good job out there. Glad to see you got out. Wish I had looked at you email in the morning. I could have pulled off that trip with no problem. Was right in Buckeystown most of the morning.
Send me a email and tell me a little more about the trip, also I will giv you my cell number in case anything like this comes up in the future.

Phil

TOOBIGTOYAK  03/21/2005 - 12:01    I'm glad you got a nice one to start the year with. One of the best things about fishing is watching those turles slide off the logs and hit the water ( you are the only one that will understand smalljaw ). Let me know about Thursday seeya
