Update 2004-06-18: Roscoe's office says send then letters. See more for details. I found an article out of Cumberland that has some good information in it. Read it and you'll find out that it looks like the Maryland Geological Survey is not providing their share (30%) any more. The next step is to talk to Jim Jeffries, field office chief for USGS in LaVale, to get more detail on where they are heading. From the Frederick News Post on Saturday June 13...Funds amounting to $166,000 supporting 3 gauges and a flood control levee have been cut from the FY '05 Federal Budget. The Wills Creek, Hancock, and Paw Paw gauges and the levee near Cumberland will be lost if something isn't done. My U.S. Rep. Dr. Roscoe Bartlett calls the move "penny-wise and pound foolish." There is not much time left as the Federal Fiscal Year 2005 starts October 1, 2004.There are several parties on that want to keep these resources funded and intact. From the article it looks like Lisa Wright could be the point person from Roscoe's office. The National Weather Service and the USGS also appear to be concerned over this possible loss.Roscoe's main site is here and his district offices list can be found here. I will be contacting the Frederick office to see if there is something that we can do to prevent this shutdown from taking place. Please be patient until we find out what we need to do and then we'll get the word out. I promise.I called into Roscoe's Frederick office to see what we should be doing and the lady indicated that as long as I was actually a constituent of Roscoe's that I should send him a letter indicating my disapproval. She also said that sending things downtown (WDC) was not a good idea because they are still experiencing mail delays due to the addition screening processes down there. I will be sending a letter once it is composed and will post its contents in this story. If you are a constituent then SEND A LETTER now. Be nice in your letter as it appears that the Feds are doing their part and we are asking them to pick up someone else's share of the pie.
