plad99frc  01/05/2012 - 19:54    I dont know if its a change in lures as much as it is exploring the river. When your in a prime spot with biting fish they seem to hit anything. Like the others said, find the good holes where they are hit by fewer folks. Cant tell you how many times ive been out on it and not seen a soul. Also, dont forget to target them channel cats. My best in the little river is a 28" but ive heard of a 20lber coming out of there. I had my best luck in late spring with higher warming water. Never went after the carp but ive snuck up on some monster ones in my kayak....Whatever you catch be sure to release to preserve the big boys. Water is polluted from all the farms anyway...

With out going into details,
oppiey  12/19/2011 - 10:53    With out going into details, you just have to find the right spots. There are some big ones in this river.

oppiey  12/22/2011 - 11:00    First, the spots are not my secret spots, not "MY" spots at all, I do not own them. I borrow them for a couple hour and leave them in as good or better shape tehn when I got there. I have shared with people on this sight before down to what rock or discarded tire holds fish. I know they respect the creation that is the river.
Most of this river is wadable, a lot of times I will take a yak or canoe and pull it behind my while I fish. Using it to get through the bigger holes. The places around Frederick and near its mouth are fished more then the more remote areas.
Check out the map of the northern areas and find the back roads crossing and fish up or down river of the bridges. I use all mid size lures, 4' senkos, 3' tubes type lures. On overcast day I will throw a buzz bait, lots of fun in a small hole

Thanks, mybe the big 16"+ don
Jedwards36  12/22/2011 - 15:32    Thanks, mybe the big 16"+ dont like my 2 inch grubs, i will try 3 inch power tubes. I get that spots are not owned, its just the knowledge of a good spot.

ogbudha  12/29/2011 - 19:06    There are some resident larger fish...and some transplants

Its northern reaches had a few tough years with some healthy manure spills causing some mortality.

I am aware that some bigger fish DNA from the big river has made its way into the lil river.

So then do I fish biggerlures
Jedwards36  12/31/2011 - 19:52    So then do I fish biggerlures like jigs and buzzbaits? Or do I use little lures and fish them in more cover? Also happy new year!

I too fish a 4" zoom on the M
carpenterpete  02/10/2012 - 09:36    I too fish a 4" zoom on the Monocacy and the Potomac. I texas rig it (less snags on the rocks) with a 1/0 extra wide gap worm hook and a 3/16 or 1/8 oz bullet sinker (depending on the depth and current). This has been my comfort lure for the past 5 or 6 years. I've cought a range of 3" smallmouth to 21" smallmouth on it, catfish, and a walleye. I've cought 17" and 18" smallmouth on the monocacy, not for a couple of years though. I used to fish smaller grubs and found that when I upsized I cought less sunfish (almost none now) and small bass. I cast the grubs out into the head of a pool or where there's rocks in current and let it fall to the bottom. I let the lure roll along the bottom in the current and keep the line tight. I started using powerpro line for this after the guys on this site were praising it and it really makes a difference. Because there's no streach you can feel every rock or bite and the difference between both. The Monocacy is a great place to fish in the summer with a backpack full of lures and snacks, swim trunks, and wading shoes. Just get in at any access and head up or down stream. Once you get away from the access it will only be you out there. Good luck.

Good Info Pete.
DanMarino  02/15/2012 - 08:37    Good info Pete. I'll have to give the Monacacy a try this summer. I've never fished it.
