A sucessful meeting at "The Honeyhole"
Captwalleye  11/27/2011 - 19:57  Trip Reports  Liberty    I finally got a chance to go fishin'.So...I got up this morning and went looking for trouble.I went to a place that has to be hit when conditions are just right.I got the there and it was actually a bit high for what I wanted to do and the place I wanted to stand.I managed to get to a spot to try casting from and worked a 3" Swimbait and a suspending jerkbait.I got one confirmed hit on the SBJ and hooked a 7" Yellow Perch.I got one other possible hit but no hookup.Put probably forty cast into that spot and decided to move on.
I moved to another place and walked and climbed on in.The "Honeyhole" as I call it.Is a place I preferr to fish before and into daybreak and before, into, and beyond dusk.I was late but just really wanted to see what was going on there.I cast some and also moved some brush and branches around to give myself some casting room.It is a spot on a spot.Steep rocky bank with deep water right up to the shore. This place has BIG FISH potential, and has produced in the past.
It wasn't happening than so I rolled out with plans to return this evening.Got back alittle bit before 5:00pm and started casting.I like to start out fan casting to my left and sweeping around to the right.Since it's deep there I count down the grub, swimbait,or Senko to get a rough idea of the lure depth and also when the fish start biting a reference to get back to them.
Four cast into arriving as the 6"swimbait on a 1/4oz ballhead jig was sinking and had gotten to about a 12 count.I felt a boink on the line and reared the rod back and got resistance.I reeled up and pulled back again and got the sensation of animation and a sudden surge of power and drag singing. The fight was on.I'm using a 3500 Diawa loaded with 6# test.Got plenty of line for just this situation. The fish made several dashes straight out from where I stood, which was good for me.I'm limited to standing only in one spot you cannot move left ot right with out getting in the water and it's too deep for that.
Roughly ten minutes later I got the fish up where I could see it,and a moment or too after that I reached down and lipped a roughly 32" Strper.I didn't have my tape so I held it up beside my rod and it went from the butt to almost the first eye.I measured that after I got home and came up with 32".That's close enough for me.I got a picture of it,after doing some serious fish handling and camera setup.I let it go after confirming I'd got the photo.
After it swam away I started to pack up and go,but than decided to give it a couple more casts.Well....on the next cast after allowing the lure to sink to a count of twenty I started my retrieve and about half way in it stopped and the rod loaded up again.I set the hook and started fighting this one.It took about the same time to land this one,and it was just about the same size.It did feel heavier thn the other.Needless to say I was feeling a bit weary, and still had to climb out of from where I was.
That's my story...I'll get the picture posted as soon as I can.Than you can see what I've tried to describe. The fishin' is NOT over yet,so give it go and enjoy.
For a second...
NewtotheUP  12/05/2011 - 22:02    ... I thought you were up on "our river"...

Nice on the fish... Double thumbs up!!!

ROUND 2
Captwalleye  12/05/2011 - 07:58    Went back yesterday afternoon to both spots.Got to first spot and discovered I had forgottened to repack my lure boxes.I had not brought my SBJ box and all I had was the deep diving SBJs.I put a #8 deep diving X-rap held my rod up to compensate for the extra long diving bill and managed a 7"Yellow Perch again. As my only fish of the entire trip.I worked out that spot pretty good with what I had than packed up and rolled on.
Spot 2 "The Honeyhole" was a dud.I got absolutely nada for my efforts. That's the thing about that place. You may hit it ten times with no action, and the next time it's golden.I just know that when it's on...it can and has produced fish of dreams.
Maybe next time....

Awesome! Simply Awesome!
DanMarino  11/28/2011 - 09:14    Way to go Capt!!!!! I've never caught a mature striper, only a couple of baby ones. Totally cool.

I got out for some shore fishing on Saturday afternoon on the smaller flows around my home with a good buddy of mine. Things ended terribly when my buddy got his in-line spinner stuck in a tree. My friend gave it a yank and the spinner struck him square in the eye. I was thankful that when I got to him I did not see the trebble hooks in his eys. The thing smacked him straight on in the eye and by God's mercy didn't hook him. I took him to the emergency room, where they put some cool dye in his eye and with a black light confirmed that he had some scratches on his cornea. All is well and he can see. There's lots to be Thankful for.

Can't wait to see the photos Andy!

Tom

very nice
space inwaders  11/28/2011 - 14:44    That's what we've been waiting for Capt, I knew you've been up to something good. Good work and congrats on 2 very nice fish on light line! I know your honeyhole is a good one, it has quite a record. Stay after them.

Tom, good thing your friend dodged that potential disaster!

God is amazing.
DanMarino  11/28/2011 - 16:01    My buddy just sent me an e-mail about his eye. He had a follow-up appointment with his eye doctor. The doctor dyed his eye and used the black light to look for the scratches on his cornea. Amazingly, the scratches are healed already. Totally amazing. The Doctor said that the cornea heals very quickly and that my friend was very, very lucky. So my buddy is doing swell. His eye hurts from getting poked by the spinner, but he should be good to go. He's taking some antibiotics and has some eye drops. He said he will never again go fishing without his glasses or sunglasses on.

Your partner is very lucky
Captwalleye  11/29/2011 - 06:36    That could have been a life altering experience.I'm glad he wasn't hurt badly.A snagged lure with treble hooks on a loaded up fishin' rod
can be bad news.
