when the UP is too high... and getting back to normal
space inwaders 04/06/2010 - 12:54 Trip Reports Impoundments
Last week the river was high and muddy once again, but the urge to fish on certain days is too much to resist. After sitting around a couple days that were going to be prime fishing days, it suddenly dawned upon me that there's a descent reservoir within 30 mins of my house, and ol' marble eyes is said to live there, along with nice sized largemouth bass, and a few northern pike.
I started off fishing a jig close to deep water, moved along quickly and around a couple coves and points. I was fishing a 3" bright green curly tail, and a hair jig w/ gulp minnow. As dusk approached i started to work my way back to where i started. Along the way a small largemouth nailed the 3" curly tail on a point. About 8 o'clock near the end of my retreive, out of the depths ol' wally attacks the lure, makes several short drag pulling runs, but eventually calms down for the camera. This fish was approx 23 inches and my first from this impoundment. It was alot of fun to watch the fish strike, and see the entire fight at my feet.

I tried this area a while longer, but eventually moved on, and soon after another fish was on the line, and this one had a quicker tail-beat. Turned out to be a largemouth about 12-13 inches.

One more fish on the line, something smaller, lost at shore, and another good strike but no hookup ended the evening.
I returned the next evening with Annie, but we were skunked. Seems like there is an every other day rule with fishing sometimes.
---
Friday we decided to head to the bay and bottom fish some bloodworms. We fished 5-9pm and caught 7-8 small stripers 10-15 inchers. It was fun though we wished we were using our light weight rods.
---
Now that the river has calmed down to some degree i figured it might be worth a try. I drove up yesterday evening and found the clearest water i've seen in a month. The level was low enough that i could access of a few of my favorite spots.
I started off at a very productive area this time of year, using a slip bobber and jig, didn't do much within 30 mins so i moved on. Fished several other areas with the jig alone and a sjb. One little smally took the SJB as the sun was setting. I headed back to the first area and after 10 mins or so of steady casting with the gold SJB finally something on the line! It was a descent fight and ended being a 18 inch or so walleye.

I missed a strike, tried a couple different SJBs, and back to the one that produced the two fish of the evening.
