UPPER POTOMAC/CANAL RESCUE CONTINUED!!
ogbudha 03/23/2010 - 09:14 Trip Tools Roll Your Own
CONCERNED RIVER USERS,
Yesterdays efforts went pretty well. We used both backpack and barge electrofishing equipment to remove two tanks of fish from the canal. We recovered mostly large carp, but also got bass, suckers, catfish, sunfish, and one large (~25”) female walleye. The guys worked hard as we removed probably 500 + lbs of carp!
We are planning to work the canal below Dam 5 tomorrow. Volunteers can meet us at the Dam 5 parking lot at 9:00 am. This area of the canal has really receded so we will be using backpack units. I think 5 or 6 guys would work for tomorrow.
I need 5 people to assist the DNR/NPS tommorow. I specifically need individuals who are going to be in chest high, muddy, cold, rock infested, logjamb filled water. ( paints a pretty picture doesnt it?) I need thick chest waders, no slip ( no felt) boots ,etc. Individuals should be prepared to get dirty and work very hard in and around boulders, downed trees and mud. This is very labor intensive work and in very difficult work environment.
WHAT TO BRING:
-Chest waders ( neoprene or breathable)
- Seine nets
- throw nets
- long handled nets
- 5 gal buckets ( working w/ Lowes and Home Depot to donate)
- change of clothes
- food and water for yourself.
- cell phone/camera ( for documentation and communication)
- plenty of sleep the night prior
- a positive attitude, regardless of how many fish are recovered per. portion of canal
We are starting our recovery efforts tommorow at 9am.
Interested parties can email me at fishpotomac@ msn.com ASAP. As always..questions,concerns? EMAIL ME.
Thanks,
Ben Hynes
