10-17 ~ 10-24
space inwaders  10/31/2009 - 10:00  Trip Reports    The weather hasn't quite been cooperative during the past few weekends, but we got out in the rain on 10-17, the water was rising fast and the currents were very strong. Toward the end of this evening the back flows were so strong it was hard to feel our lures. Still 2 fish were kind enough to bite, and the first on the very first cast, about a 21" walleye. It was raining too hard to measure or photo this one.

Next evening we got out to a closer to home place where we have luck sometimes. After about 30 mins they started biting pretty well. Annie got her first walleye since the springtime- a really hard fighting 19"er.

This fish was pulling drag making hard runs, we thought it was a big one for sure!

I ended up with one measuring 18.75" and one smaller than that maybe 17". I tried many different lures and we caught fish on 3 different ones.

The fish this evening were biting a very slow retreive.

I went back to the same area weds evening, the bite was pretty good! First fish on the fifth cast, and 4 more plus 3 lost in the next 2 hours. All the fish were about the same size as the ones we caught on sunday. 17-20".

This time the fish were only taking one lure, but were biting a faster more aggressive retreive, except one which bit near shore on a slight twitch/pause retreive.

Went back the next evening, thurs 22. The bite was tough, it took about an hour to get the first fish, and they would not touch the lures that worked the past 2 trips! They were taking a floating bomber in a brighter color using a faster retreive. Over a couple hours i ended up with 3 fish from 18-19".

I felt like there had to be a bigger one around, and i was going to work for it. i fished a long time til about 11pm. I tried 4 areas, using 6 different lures with all varieties of retreives. At the 2nd to last area i tried, on the very first cast, BAM- something that felt a bit bigger got on the line, got into some rocks, came toward the surface and my lure flew toward me... It could have been a smallie comming toward the surface, but it felt like a walleye and i have seen walleyes come to the top while fighting when its well after dark.

Tried the area again saturday with Annie, we might have gotten one bite in a few hours, no fish landed.

This october sure hasn't been nearly as good as last year, the weather has been a little inconsistent and the water has been as low as i've seen it. At least we've gotten some rain now and the river should be back to more normal levels. I'll be out this weekend and early next week without a doubt. Get out there and good luck!
