Loch Raven 9-25
Steve826  09/25/2009 - 14:24  Trip Reports  Loch Raven  Roll Your Own    My dad and I rented a boat today at the Loch. It was a lot of fun. It was actually our first time fishing from a boat. It is definitely a whole different game then fishing from shore and wading! We fished from 9:30-12:45. While the weather was nice and the boating was fun, the fishing wasn't too good. I caught one 10-inch largemouth on a split shot rigged 6 inch watermelonseed Zoom lizard. The fish hit on the drop and put up a pretty nice fight. We didn't have a fish finder or map of any kind so fishing deep water was tough. We covered quite a bit of ground in 3 hours. Mainly the coves and points near the fishing center but we ventured out into some deep water too. The spot I caught the one bass in was a drop off about 40 or 50 yards off shore. As for lures, we threw buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, tubes, shallow diving cranks, floating Rapalas, lizards, and grubs, with the lizard being the only producer.

The Loch is a beautiful lake and I can see why it's so popular. I'm sure if we came back with some more knowledge of the lake we'd do a little better. I doubt we'll be going back soon though because it's an hour away from home. Next spring I'm planning on buying a 30 lb thrust motor + battery to use at Black Hills and Clopper on their rentals.

Trolling motor
Steve826  09/27/2009 - 10:32    I'm planning on getting the motor first this fall or next spring, and either a 10 ft Pelican or BPS Pond Prowler, or a 12 ft riveted jon the year after that. I'm leaning towards the Pelican/Pond Prowler style though...more stable, higher weight capacity. Only drawback is less room for gear, but I think the stability and weight capacity is more important, I can always bring less gear. I know 2 people with this style boat and they both say it's very good for small lakes. I get the boat as a gift for graduating HS.

There's definitely a limit on how much thrust I can use on a small boat. 55# would most likely be too much for a small boat, I'm thinking 30-40 would be better. Anyone know the max for a small 10-12 ft boat? I'll always have another person in the boat, if that makes a difference.
