good morning*OLD POST EDIT*
space inwaders  09/14/2009 - 20:42    Last saturday morning, i just couldn't sleep. It was about 4:30 am when i was tossing and turning, what was the problem? I think the river was calling, and i was listening.

Should have just got right up, but i got out of the house about 5 am and casting into the flowing water by 6 am. I was traveling light and planning to keep moving.

First area, a few casts, nothing, i moved on. Next spot, toward the shoreline. 2nd cast, bam,a nice fighter, felt like a walleye, and it was. A nice 20"er.

That really felt great, it'd been about a month since my last wally.

10 more minutes or so, no fish, so i moved on to another area, no fish there, moved on.

Next spot, within a few minutes, i was lucky to see the walleye come up from the bottom near shore and slam down on my lure. A nice 19"er.

I tried some more areas, and about 30 mins later- a pulsation on the line. This was a long cast and a long fight. A skinnier 19"er this time. My camera wouldn't cooperate on this one.

By 8 am I thought about heading home, but i stayed a while longer and tried another area a bit downstream. The water was SO LOW, it was too interesting exploring at low water.

I tried jigging from about 8-9, but no dice. Surprisingly.

I kept hiking and casting. In a nice looking area, a nice fighter gets on the line. I wasn't sure what this was, til it surfaced and gave a little jump. A descent sized smallie 16"er.

That bass was so calm while i was handling it out of the water. The walleyes were fiesty and were difficult to handle today. It was great to find a few and feel that great feeling on the line.

It was an overcast day with falling barometer, so i hit it again in the evening. NOTHING!

Nice Work Steve
DanMarino  09/16/2009 - 08:21    Nice work Steve. I really want to catch a walleye some day, but I guess I'm not fishing in the correct geography. Not that I'm looking for you to reveal any secret fishing spots, but should I hit the Potomac above Harpers Ferry to increase my odds of getting one?

Last Sunday evening I fished the last hour of daylight along the lower Montgomery County section of the Potomac. I went wet wading to my favorite rock ledge and ended up catching a nice smallie in the 16-17 inch range. The fish was heavy when I set the hook and it stayed down deep. At first I was thinking it might be a catfish or walleye, but then it eventually did a small jump and went back deep again. The river was low, clear, and it was beautiful outside. I fished until a little after 8PM when it was dark and I was hoping I might luck into a walleye. I realized my flashlight battery was almost totally dead so I decided to stumble back to shore and up to the canal towpath before it got really dark out.

Capt.Nick  09/16/2009 - 15:15    Dan It wasn't like that for Steve either til july 10th.
(read his post on July 10th) when guide Dan Hodgkinson (fishnfloatadventures)showed Steve where & how.I have fished with Dan 3 days for Walleyes & Muskys on the Potomac and he knows the river well.We caught Walleyes on the Waleye trips & raised 2 muskys & 1 hellava shoulder stopping strike that never stuck home on the Musky trip.Go from a Zero to a Hero with 1 Walleye trip.

zero to hero huh?
space inwaders  09/26/2009 - 14:21    Capt.Nick real cool buddy- Dan gave me some good tips on jigging and showed me a few good places. We went out for a quick afternoon trip, Dan's very knowledgeable, good company, and he gave me some good tips on daytime wallys. we talked about behavior of the fish, and many common locations that we fish and why they hold fish. A great time- i'd hire him for a trip in the future.

But, that afternoon wasn't when i started catching walleye.

If you read back through the last year of posts on this page you'll see many reports and pictures of nice walleyes we've lucked into for the last year. Capt' walleye was a big help to me about a year ago, and i've gotten into some good walleye every now then at many places i've found exploring the river.

DanMarino- i know there are walleyes even in the lower potomac, great falls and mather gorge was known in the LATE 1800s, as a home for trophy sized walleye, although nobody really knows how they got there back then.

people catch walleye from as far down as national airport from what i've heard and read last winter and up to cumberland. I live in the Blueridge so i do fish out my way.

I wonder if the upper reaches are better, or if it just has more people fishing for walleye there. there's easy boat access up that way and there isn't between great and little falls. Many people fish for them farther upriver, while not many closer to DC. i beleive walleyes are throughout the river, but you have to fish near the right features, at the right time, with the right lures, worked the right way, its a tough game.
