An introduction
Captwalleye 08/29/2009 - 19:56 Trip Reports River
I hit a river near you on Friday morning and performed an introduction.A new friend to and a old and faithful friend. It was my maiden voyage with my new yak.I got a super deal on a mint T-100.It was already fishing rigged, and ready to go.So I did just that.
I went to a spot I really like that you launch from a stream mouth. It had rained earlier that morning, and the stream was running pretty good and the water looked like chocolate milk.I actually got paddling and fishing at around 7am.I wanted to get there earlier but...you know how it is.
I was campaigning topwater mostly all day.A black buzzbait and a Lucky craft Sammy.I had another rod with a Senko rigged wacky style but never really fished it too much.
I fished a total of nearly eight hours.I caught and landed a total of 17 Smallies and had at least that many more on and lost. The fish ranged from 6-15+".I had one of those hits on a Sammy that still makes me shake my head.I wasn't really ready or expecting that bite to happen as it did.I was trying to adjust my foot on an underwater rock to hold myself still.I had already cast and it was just sitting there. There was a huge swirl
the rod sort of loaded.I did not set the hook (that was my undoing). The fish took off away from me,came to the top and broke water. It was a "WHOA" and a heartbreaker as the line when slack and the fish disaapeared. That was probably fifty cast and three hundred yards into the trip. That gave me something to think about the rest of the time I was out.
The river is low and clear.Perfect for wading.I got off the yak a few times and set it up on a rock and waded around casting. If wading is your thing than you owe it to yourself to hit it asap.
The new ride did great, and I'm scheming to get up there again soon.I'd like a rematch with that big one.I saw four mature eagles and one immature. One osprey,a bunch of geese, too many cormorants, and two deer.It was overcast all day,and it did rain right hard right about 2 or so.I got the top of my legs sunburned real good even with it being overcast.Real smooth on my part. That will teach me to wear shorts.
If you go,go early.THe earlier the better.I think the big ones roll up to feed as it gets light and back off when full daylight occurs. The most fish came from eddies between stiff to moderate current flow.
Go and enjoy yourselves the river is right there where you left it. Patiently waiting...
