Will wonders never cease....
Captwalleye  08/21/2009 - 19:57  Trip Reports  River  Roll Your Own    I actually went fishin'yesterday evening with my eldest daughter Samantha and her boyfriend Randy on a river near you.We were after you know what, and we did pretty good.At least two of us did.

We went to a spot that produces right regularly, and I set them both up in the two best spots to stand.I directed them as to where to cast, and what kind of retrieve to use. I just stood back and watched, and suggested little tips that could help them in their quest.

Well...I stood there for maybe fifteen minutse than decided that they had enough head start and I need to wet a line myself.A fella can only endure for so long.

I picked up my rod and stepped out beside Samantha and let fly abit further than she was casting.I engaged my reel, took up the slack, and cranked the lure on down.I was throwing a suspendig jerkbait.I began a pop pop pause cadence and about four movements into my first retrieve I was rewarded with the sensation of animation."Fish on"! I told Samantha that I had one and see said are you kidding? I said look at the end of my rod.Which was loaded up and doing that slow dance that only a Walleye can do.She called me a showoff.I got it in,netted, and on the stringer. It was about 20" long and healthy.I laid my rod back down and told them both it was their turn, and to get hot.

Time passed, and it got darker.I just observed and helped when it was needed. They both got snagged a couple times and I was able to free all but one.I also changed their lures a couple times to see if that would entice a bite.I went from floating jerkbaits to suspending,I changed colors, and different sizes.

All of a sudden Randy spoke up and said he had one.I had explained to him what to do when he hooked one,and he did great.I got the net,and a few moments later slipped it under his first Walleye, and a good one too.It measured 26.5",and was healthy. The photo was sent in and posted here in the photos section. It was revived after being measured and released.Any over 24" are release to keep the stock going. They also really do not taste that good.I preferr those less than 24"and really the 15-20's are what I want.

I would take Samantha's rod from time to time to make an extra long cast into a specific area, and I'd set up the lure into the pop pop pause cadence than hand her the rod.Would you believe that twice while doing this I got hit,and hooked fish.I handed her the rod and told her to handle the tough part while I went for the net.She did well, and those fish were candidates for the stringer too.

I also managed while Samantha was taking a break to stand right where she was standing and catch another one by myself. It turned out to be a decent one too of 26".That fish was measured, photoed, revived and returned to the river in good shape also.

The final score was five landed. Two citation size released, and three from 20-22.5" kept.
Randy got his first ever, and a trophy photo.I got one too and hooked three others. Two of those I landed and two were landed with assistance from Samantha.

When we got home I asked If they would care to go again? They both said certainly as soon as their schedules would allow.I guess we'll see what happens next time.
good news
space inwaders  08/22/2009 - 14:30    Glad to see the Capt. out on the river. Sounds like the river was kind to give you some real quality fish too. Thanks for posting the pics of those big 26"ers and releasing them. Thats great to hear about so many good fish from one area. A 20"er is a good one in most places in walleye country, it really is amazing how good it can be in the river.
