sat august 1st
space inwaders  08/07/2009 - 22:33    I've still been at it, but luck has been sparse. However, saturday the 1st was an exceptionally good day on the water!

Little bit of rain the night before, river was up about 6", stained in some areas.

I fished my new good luck area, using a 4" chartruse grub on a 1/8oz and later 1/16 oz jig heads. I fished A couple hours before dark til dark.

After a what felt like a while- some life on the line, just a slight tick. The stubborn nose diving, and slow tail pulsation felt like a wally. A pretty 18"er or so was to blame.

I kept at it and hooked and lost another that felt a little bigger. Then a channel cat about 15" jumped on, and fought really well.

I moved down the bank a bit and not long after a strong fighter is on the line. A 22.5" walleye.

Already a great evening out, but i kept at it. They were there, and they were biting.

A little smallie took the grub after a while, and not much else. I switched lures, and within a couple casts something big! This thing was tough, and wild, i thought it was a musky at first (not that i've ever landed one!)

Got her near shore and didnt have my net handy, so i luckily grabbed her by the gill and supported her belly as a made my way to my tackle bag. Took out the camera, battery died, changed the battery, set the flash, set the timer, held the fish, the camera fell over before the picture snapped. Then when the flash went off the fish shook free onto the ground a few inches below it, the line knocked the camera into the mud. I got it all back together, wiped the mud from the fish and got a poor pic. Time was ticking and this fish needed to get back into the water, i measured her quickly at 28", and fat!! I took her upstream to where the shoreline was free of nasty thick algae, nose to the current, and held her tail and belly loosely for a couple minutes. She eventually swam off strongly.

wow.. what a fish, this is why i go 2x a week. Doesn't matter how long it takes, its worth it.

get out there folks, and good luck.

That sure is a great fish...n
Steve826  08/10/2009 - 09:43    That sure is a great fish...not a bad self portrait either!

Hey Tom, just curious, what boat did you end up getting? I remember you were searching for a jon last winter and I'm wondering what you ended up with.

Boat
DanMarino  08/10/2009 - 15:49    Steve826,

I'm surprised anyone remembered my quest for a boat. We ended up getting a 1648 Fisher riveted jon boat that was equipped with a 25/20 Mercury jet tiller and a 50 pound thrust MinnKota trolling motor. My son found it on Craigslist and some people were selling it due to a divorce. So that unfortunate situation was a good deal for me. It's a really basic set-up and everything works great. We've already put more dents and scrapes on it than what it had when we first got it, so it was gently used. In the future I'll be changing the seats and adding a small front deck to it, but all in all it's a great, basic, little boat. Works wonderfully with two people. Three people can fish fine as long as everyone is careful. Originally I wanted something all welded, but there just aren't that many boats for sale out there with jets on them and the ones that are for sale aren't cheap. So far I'm really happy with it. It definitely beats wading around in the river and stumbling over rocks and snakes.

Steve826  08/10/2009 - 18:13    Yes, well, I remember pretty much everything fishing related. :)

Sounds like a good starter rig for fishing much of the area's water. The jet motor is perfect for the UP and the 50 lb trolling motor would be plenty to get you get around the local reservoirs too.

Excellent Steve
DanMarino  08/10/2009 - 07:57    Totally cool fish Steve. Maybe one day I'll finally catch a walleye.

Saturday I fished some Montgomery County sections of the Potomac with my 11 year old son. We put the boat in at 4PM and fished until around 8PM. I was beautiful out with some overcast clouds and no wind. We caught some smallies and my son got a channel cat on a fluke that he was deadsticking. I mostly fished a buzz bait and had many strikes, but no big fish. Right after 8PM as the sun was sinking low a good sized walleye rose up and followed the buzz bait for a few seconds. The fish then decided not to strike and sank back down to the depths. If I wasn't so surprised I should have thrown out a grup of crank bait out there after I retrieved the buzz bait. I'll be ready next time.

By the way I have yet to even get a nibble on the 4 inch chartruse Mister Twister grubs I've been throwing. Is this color only good at night or in really stained water? Fish aren't even following it or showing any interest.

Tom

Some of my 4" mister twisters
space inwaders  08/15/2009 - 09:03    Some of my 4" mister twisters wont have proper action unless on a heavy enough jig and fished fast enough or against current.

I prefer the powergrub, yamamoto, gulp, and have had good luck with riverside, and apex too that are lower priced plastics.

I like to be able to use 1/16 oz jigs as much as possible and still have good action from the grub.

The chartruse colors are my choice when the water is stained to muddy, when the water is clear i typically try to mimic natural food in the area.

steve, not my favorite self portrait, but thanks, i guess=p

I should probably get some small fold up tri-pod, i always have a funny expression on my face when self-photo because im hoping the camera doesnt fall off the tackle bag into the mud, hoping the fish wont shake and cut me.

im looking into getting a canoe or kayak(s).
