At around 330pm Joe and I left the house to get a little fishing in but was not sure where I was going. On 695 at 70 I was thinking Point of Rocks, but on second thought decided to go north. Headed out 140 thinking about river crossings I picked one that I thought didn’t get a lot of pressure.
We pulled the Pickup along the bank, unload the yak and canoe. River was low so the trip ended up being a wade and paddle. Only had to wade a 100 yards or so then we could paddle. The first mile or so, nothing, not even a bite. Looking up river I was seeing a lot of Herons and was wondering if they may have over fished the area. We had a red fox follow us for ten minutes or so, then he over took us along the bank while he kept a close watch on us. We saw a deer on a high back watching us, then the bank gave way and the deer came crashing down into the river for a swim. Still no fish. I pulled up on shore and stated to think about what I was doing wrong, should have had some fish by now.
I studied the river for a few minutes, looking at the current and boils. I realized that I was casting anywhere and everywhere not really paying attention where I was casting. We got back in the boats and moved out, studying the river as I went. Looking upstream I saw the current picking up speed and some boils at the head of a big pool. Ledge! Sub surface rocks! Staying right and casting to just downstream of the boils I got a little nibble, and then another, then it got slammed. Set the hook and the fight was on. The smallie went airborne three time and pulled line off the reel. When I landed the fish it was a nice 17" smallie. We were on fish. Between Joe and I we pulled 6 smallies out of the pool. We moved upstream over the ledge beached the boats and contenuied on foot hooking up with some smaller fish. Here the river is no more than a foot deep and less than 100 feet wide. We walked into a pool that was fed by current on the left and right sides with a grass bed at it head. I cast to current river left, Joe on the right. I was watching Joe cast without any luck, I told him to cast to the current seam and let it drift a little. He cast a foot outside the seam and the senko no sooner hit the water and it started swimming away. I yelled to him to set the hook (he wasn’t watching). Hook set fight on. The fish pulled a litte then ran right at him. About five feet in front of him the fish jumped, and I mean jumped. Dag on thing must have come out of the water 5 feet!! Never saw a smallie jump that high in my life. It was a fat 15" when all was said and done. The sun had sunk over the mountain to the west so we headed back to the truck. I tossed a top water lure on the way back to the truck with no luck. 2 hours of driving for 3 hours of fishing,, yep,, it was worth it.
