Hardcore ON SHORE - 5-25 - WHOOOOOWEEE, CATFISH !
space inwaders 05/26/2009 - 20:54 Trip Reports
I haven't been posting so much lately, but i've been going twice a week. I have been thinking about where they should be, trying, trying, and trying some more. Varying the approach, breaking habits. May has been a tough month for me on shore with high water conditions, a few skunks, and a few dinks.
We decided to go after Annie's lost trophy blue cat from last summer, possibly run into a striper as well. Tidal river was the location, and after a 2 hour hellish commute we got there. And found every spot occupado! We sucked it up and fished a spot that would be underwater when the tide came in. After 1 small channel cat about 20" and 2 lost rigs, i checked the other spots, a quick jog and one spot is open, more jogging, THE OTHER ONE was OPEN!!!
We moved to our prime location- deep water to the left, main channel straight out, and shallow flat to the right. Thunderstorms approaching! We got lucky and didnt have a storm on us, but we got soaked in light rain, which didn't feel bad. We fished from dead low tide til high tide, and the action was pretty good, but the fish were small. Small there is a 5 pounder, so it wasn't a bad day by any means! Beats a skunk anytime.
Annie got the most fish, with 1 line out ( i had two ) and the largest- a 28 x 18 inch blue cat, that looked like she had a coconut in her belly!

Six or so in all from about 20-28 inches. I ended up with a strange looking cat, very yellow with a crazy bulging head, too big for a bullhead. A near record bullhead? Yellow cat? I dont know... Judging by the fins, and tail. a channel i guess.

We'll get back for the monsters another time, I know they're around, but it was fun hanging out with the whiskers for a while anyway.
Go soon and good luck!
