Farm Pond 5-16 (click Read More to see pic)
Steve826  05/16/2009 - 11:48  Trip Reports  Farm Pond  Roll Your Own    This morning my dad and I went fishing at a farm pond that we have access to. My dad did some work for the land owner so they gave us permission to fish here. We fished for around 3 hours from 8:30-11:30. On my first cast I hooked a decent bluegill on a 1/16 ounce Floating Rapala in silver, but he threw the hook. A few minutes later another bite and I brought my first fish of 2009 to hand. It was a bluegill about 8 inches long. He swallowed one of the treble hooks though and we could not get it out so we had to release the fish with the hook stuck in its throat. It did however swim off and we didn't see it splash on the surface so I think it survived. Anyway over the next three hours we caught and released 10 fish, a new record for us. We each got 5. Only 4 total were largemouth, the rest were BIG bluegills. The average bluegill was about 8 inches. The largemouth were all pretty small, in the 9-12 inch range. Not too big I know but it was fun. But there was a real lunker waiting for me at the end of the day. I caught this citation size bluegill at 11:15 AM. About 11 inches long and I would guess about 1.5 pounds. A lot of fun, I was really excited since its my NPB for bluegill.

We caught the fish on a variety of different lures- 1/8 ounce Hula Popper, 1/8 ounce Rebel Hellgrammite, 1/16 ounce Floating Rapala, and Berkley Gulp! Nightcrawlers. The big producer was the Hula Popper, which caught about half the fish for us today. We did have some problems with the treble hooks. A few fish took the trebles real deep, only once did we have to leave the hook in and I think that one survived. But one dink bass my dad hooked on the Rebel Helgie took the treble real deep and we don't think he made it. We tried cutting off one hook from each set of trebles and that seemed to help. Do you guys seem to have problems using treble hook lures?

The weather was perfect for fishin- cloudy w/ rain showers, and about 70 degrees. Per my hand touch I would guess water temp was around 72. I had a great time catchin' a mess of fish with my dad, it doesn't get a lot better than that.
Hey Steve!

What a Whopper!
TightLine  05/20/2009 - 10:35    That bluegill is a whopper for sure...your perseverance is paying dividends. Good going Steve.

That is one big bluegill righ
Dee Tee  05/18/2009 - 07:48    That is one big bluegill right there! Sounds like a great way to spend the day with dear old dad too. Try mashing down the barbs on the hooks if you are using treble hooks for catch and release. I also always carry a pair of hemostats(sp?) to assist in removing hooks.

Congrats!!!

Don't worry, my bail is open!

WOW!
jackson  05/17/2009 - 02:18    Now that's a slab!! Congrats! Glad to see you and your dad got out. Looks like you guys had a good time! With large bluegill such as that, usually means a very, very well balanced pond! Which in turn usually means very BIG largemouth is lurking in those waters! Hope you catch her one day. As to trebles on lures. When fishing any lures especially those with trebles always carry a pair of long needle nose pliers. Using the smaller bite size plugs bass will at times take them deep into the gullet, or inhale them into the gill plates. More so with small topwater lures. With bluegill them problem using small treble lures is that they have such small mouths that when they inhale one there is so little room to extract. If the season allows and I know a fish is mortally hurt I would take it home and fry'em up! Good Luck, Jackson!!
