HardCore ON SHORE vol 2-- Fishing the flood 5/6/09- soft-finned friends.

i had a day off and after a morning and afternoon of work on the house i wanted to see what flood stage looks like on the potomac.
At point of rocks the water got up to 18 feet and at hancock the water was at 22 feet or so!
I tried to think of some big shoreline features that would create a current break or slack water.
When i got there, the water was higher than i had imagined, the areas i had in mind were well underwater, but there was an area worth fishing. I could see fish getting stuck there or staying there a big back eddy. No luck though. I moved on.
There were HUGE TREES being tossed around out in the river and the
towpath was about 3' above water level and had definitely been covered with water earlier, there was silt and erosion everywhere.
I went along the towpath to a footbridge over a creek, this area was fairly calm, but not far from shore were treetops, almost fully submerged. I flipped out a bright green powergrub on 1/4 oz jig, and a slight tick, then .. is this a tree? NO trees dont move like that! I fought something big a few minutes, too big, i saw a carp at one point and lost it. I then lost FOUR MORE before landing the first one. 28 inches long 18 inch girth, and yes hooked in the mouth!
I hooked and lost at least 12. One was HUGE. I also snagged a couple of those lost fish, as i had a scales on my hook. They must have been stacked up there. I caught a 21" suckerfish too, biggest i've ever seen, he took the lure as well,
and finally just around dark another carp 31" long 20" girth!
Thought i'd share this one crazy day on the river, not exactly what i was out for, but its about time i'd catch a couple carp since there's been so many times where i see them, cast to them, and never get em to bite!
