HardCore ON SHORE vol 1-- 5/2/09 on the smaller river
space inwaders  05/06/2009 - 08:48  Trip Reports    I tried a spot on a smaller local river, wondered if the eyes may lurk there, a friend said he caught one there...

First try, i fished the east side of the shoreline, it was shallow with fast current, i couldn't see where he may have gotten one in that area, we were quickly soaked with poor rain gear. Went back a few days later fished the west side of the river, and this looked more like the right kind of water.

The water was a little high, a little stained, low 60s. Annie got a 10" smallmouth on a bright green powergrub on a 1/8 oz jig letting it wash with the current. I eventually got one on a more natural shad color soft plastic w/ curly tail bouncing with a 5/8 oz jig. Then switched to a brown with bright green tail 3" powergrub and bounced the bottom with one of my custom flat head 1/4 oz jigs that make the bait sit about 45 degrees off the bottom. Soon i got a nice tick on the line and set the hook to feel something BIG.

It was far out in the deeper flow. This fish was strong and stayed down, the fight went on for several minutes, every time i'd get it close to shore it'd pull drag back out.

Eventually i had to move behind the eddy to bring the fish in. Soon we saw the form in the water, a catfish? a musky? No, a nice sized walleye!

Just a tick over 24 inches long and a real fighter.

Thought i'd share since this is my first from the smaller river.

Might get out for some FLOOD FISHING today! 17 feet at point of rocks!? 20 something at hancock!?

VERY COOL!!!
jackson  05/06/2009 - 14:47    Definitely can tell by the pale markings fish came from stained water! Great looking fish! Don't slip! River very dangerous when it's rolling like it is now! Big or Little river. I know at times bass follow the shoreline as the water rises. Do eyes also come towards the shore in flood conditions or do they stay put in river in breaks? Good Luck, Jackson!!

Great fish man, if that "litt
Steve826  05/06/2009 - 12:00    Great fish man, if that "little river" is the one I'm thinking it is, there are some quality fish in there. Good work.

Steve

its not the little river
space inwaders  05/06/2009 - 13:53    Thanks Steve826, it is cool to work toward figuring out where they should be, but a tip from a friend is always good too!

Although, this trip was not to the "little river" that we see on this site from time to time- it was at another "smaller river" ;)

Nice work man
muskalungee  05/06/2009 - 14:11    Big Steve,
Man, that is some impressive work. You've really become quite a student of 'Ole Mr. Marble Eye. To be able to explore new water and locate the likely holding areas so quickly is quite impressive.

Little Steve,
Rumor has it that there are walleye in the little river as well....la la la la la...

Muskalungeeeeeeee!

jackson  05/06/2009 - 14:48    As well as other toothy critters! Good Luck, Jackson!!

eye's
space inwaders  06/01/2009 - 18:53    A person could fish any river a long time without catching mr. marble eyes. I've had to really tune my fishing toward them, and perservere big time. There's a handful of good ones i've caught just before dusk, and i dont know if i've ever caught one mid-day.

I know the eye's go deep when the water starts to rush, but when the flow gets too high they move toward the flooded shore line like most other fish. I was reading saugers (a close but smaller relative of the walleye) will stay in deep current at the highest flows, but we dont have them around here as far as i know.

I've yet to catch a flood time wally, but when the waters high and muddy, they still need to eat!
