Jon Boat vs. Pelican/Bass Hunter style boat
Steve826  04/27/2009 - 20:13  Boating    Ok guys, here goes.

So back in September as some of you probably remember I posted on here discussing options for buying a boat. I had originally intended on a small Pelican style jon boat until the advice I got here made me decide on a canoe. Well...I've thought it over for the last several months and I decided I don't want the canoe anymore. I really just want the stability that a jon boat brings. I talked it over with my parents and we agreed that if I wait til I graduate high school in 2 years they will help me pay for it as a graduation present. I know there is no way I could cartop it so when I get my license and get to pick out a used vehicle, its definitely gonna be a truck so I could put a jon boat in the back of it. I know it's not for two more years but obviously I'm really thrilled at the idea of having a boat instead of being tied to the shore. So I've been researching different boats. Now, what I'm wondering is, which is better: a true riveted jon boat, i.e. a Lowe 1236 such as this:

Or a Pelican/Bass Hunter style boat such as this:

I definitely don't want a trailer, so like I said I will carry it in the back of a pickup truck. I know there are probably advantages to both but I'm not really sure what. Bodies of water I want to take it on include Cunningham Falls, Black Hills, Greenbrier, Piney Run, and Needwood. Cunningham and Greenbrier are about 40 acres each, Needwood is around 70 acres I think, Piney Run is 300, and Black Hills is 500. So anyway, if y'all could give me some advice as to which style of boat I should look for, please let me know. Like I said, not really interested in a canoe or kayak anymore because I want a more stable boat for the reservoirs. I know most of yall are into the rivers but I'm just not really into the idea of a canoe anymore. I want the space and stability a jon would bring. So basically if anyone has any advantages or disadvantages to either style of jon boat, the true riveted jon or the Pelican style, then please let me know. BTW...Tuesday morning I have a Dr.'s appt in Hagerstown so I get to miss school for the day...me and dad are gonna look around at the Dick's Sporting Goods out there. I remember in previous posts someone told me to ask Ben about a question I had about a boat from Dick's. Sorry if I sound stupid but Ben which Dick's do you work at? I know there's one in Gaithersburg and the one in Hagerstown I'm gonna be at tomorrow.

Sorry about the long post, and thanks in advance everyone, you guys are always very helpful to me and I appreciate that.

Boat for sale
BaconSlayer  04/30/2009 - 10:48    Steve,

My brother and I have a pelican bass raider that we are not using anymore. He has just moved to California and it is now just sitting in the garage collecting dust. We would have the boat and trolling motos used twice if you would like to take a look at it. I am sure we could work out a deal if you are interested. We havent listed it for sale but just started talking about getting rid of it. It works great around this area and for the price you can not beat it.

BaconSlayer, I would be inter
Steve826  04/30/2009 - 11:39    BaconSlayer, I would be interested except it would collect dust for the next 2 years for me until I get my license and a truck. Thanks for the offer though.
