Wont be that long. The water was 40-41. I know this guy that snuck out for a few hrs and did very well. WATERS LOW...but the fish were stacked behind every boulder with 4ft of depth or more.
Had a chunk in hand that had a BELLY. They know....they always know....its time. When this snow melts off...IT IS TIME!

I had a day off last thursday, and i wanted to take full advantage.
There's a wintering area i heard about and i read reports of walleye caught there recently. I got there about 6:30 am, a little late, right before sunrise. By the time i hiked to the spot it was light, but at least the sun was behind a hill til about 8 am. I fished a sjb and hair jig tipped with nightcrawler. No signs of life along the creek, or in the main river. The steep banks and clear water gave me a great view into the water to approx. 6 feet. The creek's current was strong enough to be visible at the mouth, which was at an outside bend in the river main channel against a vertical rock bluff. A very good looking place, but no luck this time.
That evening we rolled up to a warm water outlet on the upper, fished on a small ledge. There was incredible surface activity, some sort of bug hatch going on, little fish everywhere and an occasional big splash. We could see a 100' wide current up and down the river where tons of activity was going on. I fished a sjb and a 3" brown powergrub on my new custom jig heads. I took a round leadhead 1/4 oz and layed it over a body dolly and hammered the head flat at an angle that makes the jig sit 45 degrees or so off the bottom.
I bottom bounced the grub below a small ledge and eddy, a nice tick on the line, a great fight is on, and it wasn't comming to the surface, a nice smallie about 14" and thick. I should have taken a picture, really nice color and stripes on that fish. About 10 mins later a largemouth about 11" took the grub. It had wierd black sploches on it... wtf? Nothing else for another hour into dusk.
We hiked up to the outlet flow, saw a few people catfishing with campfires, fished a couple places on the way, and a shallow point for about an hour. The guy down from us was nailing catfish on cut suckerfish. He brought a cat over to offer it to us and say hello, it was about 30" long, we weren't keeping, so away swam mr catfish. The place we fished was no more than 2 or 3 feet deep and didnt produce for us.
I went out saturday evening to one of my old favorite places that produced annie's citation walleye and a few other nice ones. Got there about 6:30 pm and fished about an hour and a half with the grub and the sjb, changed up retreives a bit with the sjb, but no takers. It was good to see minnows there.
Things are going to start happening soon...
