Like the post office - First trip of '09

Made it out for a few hours this afternoon with my buddy Joss. I canceled the trip last night b/c the weatherman said it was going to snow all night and I didn't want to get stuck at a slick ramp. I was a little disappointed when I woke up and saw we didn't get a drop of rain or snow. So, I called up Joss and off we went.

Of course as we approached the ramp it started to sleet. And it didn't let up pretty much the entire time. But we were there, and we were going to fish. We made the long trip up river, and fished for about an hour and a half before it it started to get dark. The river was HIGH and muddy, with debris all over the place. Tough conditions for sure, but I wouldn't trade it b/c it was just nice to get out. We didn't get a bite (except for some nice keeper logs), but that's OK. Good Times.

Hard Core!!
REB9  01/11/2009 - 15:21    Mike- Hard feeshing with that much water just after a good storm. Figure it will be feeshable in about 3 or 4 days without any more water.

Keep at em. Great time of year for a big one!

nice
ogbudha  01/11/2009 - 08:15    As always the hardcore jetboater!

Suprised you didnt hit the river a little south of that.

Hows trolling motor working?

muskalungee  01/11/2009 - 09:46    The Nastier the weather, the more I like to fish. :D Not a soul at the ramp, not a soul on the river. Besides at that level you can run 8 miles up the center of the river. You just have to watch out for giant logs and trees. Running up and back with giant sleet hitting you in the face is fun, really.

Trolling motor seems to be holding up just fine. It handled well in the current again, and we trolled around for about 90 minutes not stop on 5.

I think the boat lost some speed with the two batteries up front (but we also had extra gas in the boat this time). But like I said, the current was also ripping today so who really knows.

cold water
space inwaders  01/12/2009 - 13:24    Glad to see someone else is getting ice in the guides!

I've been out a few times in the last couple weeks. Not a bite any time out. I've been hitting some lakes and reservoirs in VA waiting for the river to calm down a bit the last 2 times- all my river spots are submerged. Been using the SJB and float n fly/plastics and fishing super slow.

I'll admit it- im thinking about building a minnow trap, so i can keep my hands in my pockets and maybe catch something.

Keep it up Mike, i want to see some cool water muskies and eyes!
