Need a Jon Boat
DanMarino  12/30/2008 - 10:02  Potomac    Hello Folks,

I've been lurking around for a few months and decided to post about this. I'm in need of a 14-16 ft jon boat for myself and my 11 year old son to fish the upper Potomac River. Late this summer and early fall we hit the Potomac River a bunch and wet waded. We had some success, but encountered a fair many snakes and had a number of times where we stumbled around. So I'm looking for a basic jon boat that my son and I could more safely fish the river with. Does anyone have any suggestions where I might find a used jon boat?

I tried to talk my son into us getting two sit on top kayaks, but he's not comfortable doing that. He's got visions of flipping over or getting swept down the river. So looks like a flat bottom jon boat would be preferred.

Not too interested in a canoe, since I want something with a small outboard engine. I'll need to motor up stream from the boat ramps and then float back down to the ramp.

Thanks,

Tom
Make sure you don't buy anything without a Title
smalljaw  01/05/2009 - 12:55    Alot of the "really good deals" out there are there because the title has been lost/misplaced etc. You cannot register a boat without a good clean title. Getting replacement titles or salvage titles or doing something illegal to get a title is just not worth the aggravation.

This is the voice of experience talking :)

Of course the advice from everyone on here helped, but every time I hear more positive things about canoes, I get more reassured and excited about getting one. Only a few more months :)

Have you checked Craigs List?
Steve826  12/30/2008 - 10:53    Have you checked Craigs List? There are usually a couple decent deals to be had there.

space inwaders  12/31/2008 - 13:24    There are some good slack water areas and good boat ramps on the UP that'll be fine with a jon boat, but with a canoe you can easily carry into just about anywhere. My dad had a jon boat when i was growing up, but we never took it to the river. jon boat also requires gas motor, trailer, registration, inspection, maintenance etc...

I'm thinking of picking up a canoe or 2 wide fishing kayaks. I cant tie 2 kayaks onto my car, but i can tie down 1 canoe.

DanMarino  12/31/2008 - 14:12    Hi Steve, hope you have a happy new year!

Yes, I totally understand what you are saying about the canoe. There is something very appealing about the simplicity, flexibility, and cost of a canoe.

If I can't find a jon boat in my price range, I'll end up getting a cheap aluminum canoe and then save up for something really nice.

Can't wait for the fun to begin.
