space inwaders 12/11/2008 - 22:15 Trip Reports River Roll Your Own
Saturday hours at the new shop gave me a day off on weds- the 2nd day of warmer temps and rainfall with a cold front due later in the day.
I arrived around 1pm and hiked to an area i found earlier this year- farther than i remembered from the car. Wading is easy there along the banks. The water level was even lower than the last time i was there. I fished about an hour- nothing but fog rolling down the river.

On the way back to the car i tried a known wintering area, but didnt want to wade very far there either. No luck.
I drove to a good nearby spot. Hiked to the deeper and harder to reach of my two favorite spots in that area. The rain had made the rocks slick, after getting half way out and slipping a few times on the easier rocks- i knew i was going in the water if i tried to tackle the next section to get where i needed to go. I made my way to the 2nd spot instead.
2 hours fishing soft plastics, and the sjb. Finally, using the sjb- some life from below, and it felt good.
It was a long cast, not far from the rocks, but the fish stayed deep, didn't run into the rocks. After a couple minutes a FATTY came to surface at my feet and i scooped up a nice walleye- 24.5" long, 16" girth.

Next cast- a nice one hooked up, but worked its way free. About a half hour later another, a nice fighter, but not big. It surfaced near my feet, about 15" also came unhooked. I'm seeing the benefit of getting the lure back in the water in the same area asap after a good fish- more fish are often roaming with the one you just caught.
