nov 1st, 2nd 2008 *OLD POST EDIT*
space inwaders  11/04/2008 - 00:53  Trip Reports    november 1st was a beautiful day, warm compared to recent days. After continuing some work on my autocross car, we decided to get outdoors for the afternoon. I had a few places in mind i wanted to check out.

We hiked around one place, found the river, it didnt look too promising, but we found a 10' or so waterfall.

We drove to another new-to-me place that i had wanted to visit for a while. Found a way down to the river, and found a really nice spot. After a while i had a serious fighter on, this was a long cast, just above current, and guess where it ran!
I had to move downstream to some slower water to land this fatty 20".

We had a couple more strikes and wrapped it up a little after dark.

We decided to hit my favorite walleye spot early am.

Suprisingly there was one other fisherman nearby. About a half hour into casting, she gets a strong fighter, and eventually lands a nice 21" walleye. Couple minutes later, and she has another on, but not as big. I estimated 14", but measured 18". Soon she has another one, approx 20".

I had no bites. I used "the lure" the night before and got the big smallie, so she was using it this morning. She was kind enough to let me try it out for a while, and not 5 mins later i hook into a nice one. After a good fight, pulling drag, i landed and measured 22".

This was amazing to me. We were using THE SAME lure, except the one i started with was a slightly different color.

We kept at it for another hour or so with no more takers. Left about 8am to get some breakfast. After breakfast we decided to visit another nearby spot and hike. We found a really good looking spot, but didn't find any hungry fish.

We drove to another place that i'd been trying to find for a while, found it! We ended up hiking about a mile to a big feature on the river.

It looked every bit as good as i had hoped, but wasnt very accessible w/o waders. We explored the bank a bit, and after fishing some really nice looking areas, a 16"x12" smallie nailed a floating rapala in a less likely spot.

We decided to head to the car, head home for some sleep, food, and guiness. On the way back to the car we stopped at a interesting looking spot. There was an underwater ledge, and i watched a smallie come out of nowhere behind the ledge up onto it and miss my lure. Then i casted to the same spot again and got him! about a 10"er. A few minutes later- the catch of the day bit her short fatty crank when i gave it a try!

We contemplated hitting the early AM again for monday nov3, but decided to try the afternoon instead, i was hoping the afternoon sun might warm the water and get them going. We arrived around 1530.

I saw my minnow fishin buddies there, and they were having a slow day but did catch a small musky. Within 10 minutes i had a NICE one on the line, this one took a few runs, pulling drag. At the end, 22".

She was casting the yo-zuri and not having luck, so we switched. The yo-zuri DID produce about 30 mins later. I hooked into a few smaller ones 14-18", skinny, and lost a nicer one. She also hooked a nice one, but lost it. I decided to tie on a larger lure. 2 more, ~ 20", but the last hour or so was dead, our legs were getting numb, so we headed in for a break, then decided to head for some soup instead.

This past weekend we didnt catch many fish, but definitely some quality fish!

its cold out there, but you'll get used to it, its worth going!
You two are just too much!
Captwalleye  11/04/2008 - 12:47    Way to go! That is a great Smallie. It took me like 47 years to finally catch one like that from moving water.Congratulations!
I hit your spot this morning at 0500 and had it all to myself..It doesn't look like the way I remember it.I had one Walleye on and didn't heed my advice and horsed it,so..it got off.I was there roughly three hours and moved around a bit.I caught a small Smallie on a grub, and had a small Musky very deftly remove the grub from my line.I stood there and had a good laugh over that. The river took one SBJ and a grub so the river won today.
That is combat fishin with all the loose line laying in and around the water. That spot had real potential but so much to contend with to fish it.Add a bunch of knuckle heads and I'd look else where.I can appreciate the wader business, and that would definetly be the way to go.
Stay on em and be extra careful if you getting in the water after them.

nice-
space inwaders  11/05/2008 - 07:58    glad you got up there, but sorry it wasn't so kind to you. There are a few places that can be fished without much trouble and there are a few easy wading areas once you learn the area. I go knee deep or less b/c i have hip waders-keeps me from going too far. I also use 4-6lb size fireline, 10-14lb test, helps me cast far and keep the lure natural, but fight the snags and rocks. I set the drag a little light for the line's strength, to not abuse the equipment and keep it fun. I dont loose lures or fish due to broken knots, cut lines, or snags too often, i couldn't go back to mono for these reasons.

do you guys prefer mono or superline?

PowerPro
muskalungee  11/06/2008 - 12:49    I'm a powerpro fiend, 2/10 for me when it comes to jerk baiting and cranking. But starting to recognize more and more that there is a time and a place for mono.

Muskalungeeeeeeee!

lines
space inwaders  11/07/2008 - 10:26    My buddy LOVES powerpro for saltwater fishing- there the long cast is very important. The stuffs pretty expensive for me though which is why i go compromise with fireline. Sometimes when teh water is super clear, and the bite is tough, i think they can see my black fireline- and wonder if mono would be the ticket then. I have the "crystal" fireline on a larger baitcaster, i have heard its hard to see once underwater in the thinner sizes. With the black 6/14 fire line i use, its hard fr ME to see the line outside of the water to watch it while fishing. I might try something more visible, but i want it to be invisible to the fish.

Impressive!
ogbudha  11/04/2008 - 08:00    I feel threatened that we have someone who fishes more than me on the board!! lol

Great job slaying those river fish.....nice work!
Dedication is paying off. Those smallies looked like they were wearing their winter coats! ( fatties)

threatened
space inwaders  11/04/2008 - 08:15    haha!! No need to feel threatened- i put em back! We'll have to join forces and prosper together.

winter coats- i like that, they sure did.

Seriously we spent ALOT OF TIME out there, but we love it, and the fall foliage was beautiful, the skies, clouds, it was a great weekend. My autocross car has been sitting in the garage for 3 weeks w/ the trans off- its too nice to work on it! She is lucky to have a 4 long-day work week, and i start work again in 2 weeks.
