Fishing with Sam + Muskie On!!!!
smalljaw  08/30/2008 - 19:39  Trip Reports  Potomac

Fished with my son Sam this afternoon. Launched out around 2:30pm. Ran upriver to a couple of guys waving from a boat. Looked like Muskalungee's boat so I ran over to say hi. Got a little closer and realized it was someone else's boat so I turned and kept heading upriver. A little later I got a text from TheDuder wondering why I had snubbed him. Sorry Duder...didn't realize it was you or we would have kept coming over.

Anyway Sam and I caught a bunch of fish...including smallies, greenies, rock bass, bluegills and the elusive Muskalungeeeeee!! My first ever. Got him on a buzz bait. Sam gets credit for the photo.

Had a great time enjoying Sam's company and some water in the river finally.

into it and enjoying himself? I believe your just hitting your stride and marked for bigger, better, and more fish.So you better be ready.

smalljaw  09/03/2008 - 20:27    I took your advice and he loved it. We caught fish throughout the day and the muskie really tickled Sam. He said "Dad! If you're gonna catch a Muskie can you let me know next time!" What a treat.

Excellent!
Captwalleye  09/04/2008 - 04:16    See how long it takes for "him" to suggest you go fishin,it shouldn't take long. The fishin is getting ready to really explode too so that will just make it all that much better."Go for it"!

well done!
muskalungee  08/31/2008 - 18:48    Well, if it wasn't me that was there when you caught your first, I'm glad it was your boy!

Well done man, and I'm glad to see you holding it (and posing so calmly)! That is the perfect size to learn your grip,w/o getting sliced and diced.

That is definitely a pure strain, a great sign for the river. A quick and easy way to tell (on the smaller ones) is the pointy tail. It gets a little tougher when they get bigger, but besides the gill plate that is typically the easiest and quickest method.

As for stocking, I think they're getting away from the tigers...especially since the pure strain seem to be doing well. I'll check into it though and get you a solid answer from DNR.

muskie stocking
Steve826  08/31/2008 - 12:30    No, they stopped stocking the tigers to prevent spreading of whirling disease. I dont think they have any plans in the near future of stocking them again.

Nice day Jeff, its always good to spend time with the family. Congrats on the muskie as well.

Stocking
ogbudha  08/31/2008 - 15:23    They stocked them as recently as Early 07'. I havent heard if they are going to stock again or not anytime soon. I have heard rumors of a few thousand fingerlings ( 5-7") being potentially stocked out towards the Cumberland area..or West Branch but these were just campfire beer rumblings. Prob. some truth to it though. I have done ok ( not as good Mike) in recent years. I normally get a few a year...during cooler months or transitional times. I have seen/spooked a few monster musky down around my usual haunts. They are rare...but they are in that area too. The stretch you guys were at is definetly the hot bed for those bigger muskies. Nice Job!

Stocking Question
Chumlee  08/31/2008 - 08:28    Great day smalljaw, especially with your son aboard. Does the state still stock Tiger Muskies in the UP? If so, any idea of how often and how many they put in?

Not sure
smalljaw  08/31/2008 - 12:10    but I think Muskalungee Mike might know.
