Low but not too low...on a river near you
Captwalleye 08/23/2008 - 06:18 Trip Reports River
Yesterday afternoon,I met up with Smalljaw on a river near you.To explore the possiblities of catching some fish from a low river. We first ran down stream and fished the side with shade.Figuring that since fish have no eye lids or ears for holding on sunglasses
that they would be attracted to a location easy on their eyes.Amazingly we were corrected too.
We fished buzzbaits, grubs, flukes, poppers, and Jack's worms catching fish on them all. This area has got some really nice structure, and will definetly be remember for future reference when the river gets back up to where it normally belongs.
Jeff, brought a portable stereo along and we listened to some smooth tunes as we drifted and maneuvered through, along and over a multitude of ledges, troughs, sunken wood, and other cosmic debris scattered along the bottom.
The hot bait was a toss up between a buzzbait and the steadfast pumpkin green grub.
I provided some additional entertainment for my fishing partner by after catching the first fish and first Smallie on a buzzbait.Due to a series of rapid tragic events such as a miscalculation of thumb pressure to my spool leading to a professional line overrun,a flaw in the line roughly six inches (Jeff saw this trailing behind the lure)above the lure, and a small taste of misfortune for me.While performing the sequence of motion necessary for making an Olympic class long cast.I treated Jeff's ears to the whoosh of the rod,and the whirl of the lure as it headed on it's journey. The sharp loud crack of the breaking line,as the spool suddenly stopped revolving (remember I mentioned a professional line overrun).Than Jeff's eyes were treated to seeing that newly freed lure make a most wondorous long arching flight up and away to land with a soft plop in the water.I cannot recall exactly what words of encouragement he directed to me in relationship to my misfortune, but let me assure you.His laughter and his being bent over double from this laughter were pretty intense.I,after regaining my composure and making sure Jeff hadn't busted a gut laughing.Reach down for my bag of tricks and got another buzzbait out to retie on my line.
We went up and down that section of bank several times, catching fish fairly regularly.Toward the end of the time we fished there Jeff got really serious with a buzzbait and took me to school.
We decided that before ending the day we would slip upstream to some fast flowing water and give it a try.Once arriving and Jeff jocking us into postion, and dropping anchor.Jeff again proceded to kick butt and take names. His weapon of choice was the grub.
Now I will admit he was kind enough to allow me to hand land and unhook the one and only Walleye caught (by him).It was about 14-15" and looking good.It was also the lunker of the day.As a matter of fact Jeff also caught the largest Smallie (12-13")too.
We didn't catch any large fish, but we did catch fish.We enjoyed the time off,the weather was right on,the company righteous ,and the fish were cooperative. It was a very sucessful and rejuevenating for the soul fishing trip.(It kicked my rearend.I slept like a deadman)
So...If we can do it.Than so can you.Make time, get your gear and get going.Even if only for an hour. You owe it to yourselves to get out there, and take it all in.The seasonal change is coming, you can see and feel that subtle difference. It's meant to be enjoyed and savored.Get yourself a little taste. Go fish!
Oh... Mr.Smalljaw...THANK YOU again for allowing me to accompany you and share a splendid day on a river near you.
