Cunningham Falls Lake August 15-16
Steve826  08/17/2008 - 13:42  Trip Reports  Impoundments  Roll Your Own    My family went camping this weekend at Cunningham Falls State Park and had a real good time. We went fishin both nights so I got to test out my new reel! It performed really well. Didnt catch any fish though...but it casted and retrieved real smooth and no line twist! First night I fished watermelonseed grubs on a 1/8 oz jighead..for about 3 casts, until I started pulling up huge chunks of grass with it due to the weight. I hate that grass that grows in the lakes during the summer. Switched to a weightless Senko which didnt get as much grass on but I still didnt get any solid bites. Still trying to learn how to fish a Senko...I sort of just deadstick it for a few seconds in cover and then twitch it back to me real slow. Eventually it got too dark and we had to go back to the campsite.

Next night we got an earlier start and fished from 7-8:30. This time we decided to keep it simple and dunk nightcrawlers. My brother caught a HUGE bluegill, the biggest I've ever seen except in pictures. We didnt get time to measure it but it was about 11 inches which would mean it would be a c-class fish. That turned out to be the only fish. I got skunked..again..but it was still fun. I tried a buzzbait for the first time..I think I bought too light of a size. I got the Pond Magic which is a 1/8 oz buzzer and would work in a pond..hence the name..but its difficult to cast it in a larger body of water. Today we had to go to Walmart to get some stuff so I bought a new buzzbait and spinnerbait. They were both 1/4 ounce so I should be able to cast farther. I dont know how many of you get fishing supplies at Walmart, but I got them from that display they have at the bottom of the fishing aisle...ya know those $1 spinnerbaits and buzzbaits they have. I dont know if they work since there pretty cheap but they look good and if they dont work then I'm only out $2.

Well the dog days of summer make fishing difficult..but fall will be here soon and the fishing will get better...well I hope so anyway...

Munkin  08/21/2008 - 20:32    Senkos work well there as well as jigs in the ends of sunken trees.
