Pond Trip 7/30
Steve826  07/30/2008 - 21:22  Trip Reports  Impoundments  Roll Your Own    Hit the pond this evening from 7-9. Only caught one fish, a sunfish, on a nightcrawler. Other than the live 'crawlers, we also tried a variety of lures. Grubs, Flukes, Hula Poppers, and Hardnose frogs all failed. Dad got a tap on a grub and a half hearted strike on his Hula Popper and thats all. Me...well other than the sunfish I caught I didnt get anything else. Very very frustrating. This pond is starting to really frustrate me, because its a confusing pond to figure out the patterns. I've only figured out a couple things. One, the main forage is bluegills. Two, there is not many areas of the pond that we can find where bass routinely hold. Three, the bass seem to get active at dusk and feed on top. Tonight, we were perplexed that they didnt seem to be active feeding on top since it was rainy and overcast and we fished til it was real dark out. Oh well, we'll figure these fish out someday..hopefully.

Typical Summertime!
jackson  07/31/2008 - 06:29    Steve, In a reletivley small pond during the summertime with high temps. like we experience, it is not unusual for water temp. to skyrocket into the 90's during the daylight hours. With the low dissolved oxygen content, high water temps., and the abundance of forage this time of year, Largemouth especially, become lethargic with a slower metabolism. However, as it appears you are doing concentrate your time during the low-light or night time hours. Also just prior to a low-pressure system and/or just before or immediately after a thunder storm can be more productive. Even in highly pressured ponds with high forage content you can trick these fish into biting. Long as there is not a lot of bank activity (by people) and your relatively quite on your feet, you should be able to circle this pond making parallel cast to bank at varying distances with a buzz-bait. This should get you a reaction bite when bass are not even in a feeding mode. As advised before wait till dusk or shortly before beginning. Make a long a cast as possible and just before the bait hits the water start your retrieve with your rod tip up high and as lure gets closer lower your tip. Good Luck, Jackson!!
