Bream Fishin 6/21
Steve826  06/21/2008 - 18:55  Trip Reports  Impoundments  Roll Your Own    Me and the family headed to the pond we've been fishing lately this evening for 2 hours. After the success we had last weekend catchin bream we decided to go after bream. I assumed they were still on their beds because they definitly were last weekend. Last weekend, they would attack ANYTHING that hit the water near their beds. Now, we had to work just to get bites and the bites we got werent solid, just little nibbles. My brother got 1 and I got 1, both on Berkley Gulp Maggots fished beneath a bobber. My dad got a blowup on his popper but didnt connect (he was bass fishing) I'm a little angry at myself for going after bluegills instead of bass fishing but the more I think about it, the more I realize that bluegills arent that easy to catch consistantly. They nibble and pick at your bait which can make it hard to hook up sometimes. I'm not gonna be able to get out next weekend (family are visiting) so the week after I'll have to get out and bass fish. There are some solid bass in this pond, the reason I was bream fishing is because I thought it would be constant action because I thought they'd be spawning..I was wrong. Oh well I had fun I didnt get skunked and I'll bass fish next time.

EDIT: I forgot to ask, when should I be setting the hook if I'm fishin for bream? I got a couple fish that became unglued, probably because of a bad hookset. I was hesitant to set the hook too hard cause I didnt wanna tear the hook out of the fishes mouth but I'm wondering how exactly I should do it.

Steve
Thanks Capt
Steve826  06/24/2008 - 10:01    You're right, its just good that I got out. I think I may have been setting the hook too hard so next time I go after small fish like bluegill I'll experiment a little with hooksets.

Glad you got back on here Capt, its been awhile, been fishin for any 'eyes lately?

Good deal!
Captwalleye  06/24/2008 - 08:53    Your last line sums it up quite nicely. You had a good time, caught fish, and there is always next time. You can make it alot easier on yourself by omitting a particular species and just go fishin'.That's what I do.I've just got to a point where I know I'll catch that certain species, but don't have put pressure on myself saying that's what I'm after.I welcome any fish that will stretch my line.

What type of hook set?Well.. if your hooks are sharp you shouldn't have to cross their eyes with a "home run" type hookset. You may be dealing with small fish and they can't get the bait and hook in their mouths. You can play with hook size and go smaller,BUT that can lead to deeply hooked fish and possibly killing them.Your using a bobber so try this let the fish take the bobber under completely and than try a flick of the wrist hookset.

Remember what and how your dealing with.YOUR solution can be applied to other forms of fishin, and lead YOU to be a better fisherman.

Good that you got out

I just keep a tight line and start reeling in when I think they have the hook in their mouth. No whopping Bill Dance style hookset required for that species of fish.
