Valuable Lesson(s) Learned
Reel Lunker  06/08/2008 - 11:37  Friends of MDfishing.org  Monocacy  Roll Your Own    Went for a float yesterday down the monocacy. The day was beautiful, the water was muddy with zero visibility which made fishing tough. What makes fishing even tougher is when you lose both of your rods when you tip your kayak. When floating through a shallow swifter area, I paddled lazily through, got turned sideways and tipped my kayak. Being stupid, I had both of my rods sitting in the rod holder with no protection from losing them. I ended up losing both of my rods in waist deep water. Luckily all my other gear was secured to the kayak. I will try to go back in a few days when the water clears up to see if I can atleast find or feel around to hopefully salvage the rods, although I don't have my hopes up. Could turn out to be an expensive donation to the river. Lessons learned: Secure all fishing gear to the kayak, and make sure all rods are in and secured in their respective rod holders. Invest in some rod leashes. Finally, dont stop paddling through moving water. (Unfortunately, these are all lessons I have read about from other peoples misfortunes.)

I am excited about getting to buy some new rods, however, it is bitter sweet having to do so in this manner. Any suggestions on new rods and reels. I plan on doing some research through In-Fisherman, Field & Stream, Bass Pro.

One plus, we were able to float within 30 yards of a bald eagle and her eaglet sitting in the tree top which was quite a sight to see that close. Later saw them again downriver flying 100 yards off the bank.
I also had to replace a rod
jackson  06/09/2008 - 05:49    I also had to replace a rod this year for one that I broke. I've always been partial to the All-Star rods. I just recently purchased from BPS an All-Star 7' Med Action with a fast Tip. Model TAS845STR. Teamed up with a Shimano Symetre 2500 Reel. As for bait casters, I'm kinda old school strictly using Garcia' 4600C. I know consistently over the years seen a Bald Eagle above the Lily-Pons area. Never seen an eaglet though! Cool! Did see her eating a possum on the bank once. Good Luck, Jackson!!

Sorry to hear of your loss...
TightLine  06/08/2008 - 16:42    Sorry to hear of your loss...I used to canoe quite a bit, and lost a couple of rods in the UP in Mather Gorge. We were just starting the trip, and hadn't even put on our life vests. The first set of rapids came upon us, and the guy in the front wanted to go left, and I tried going right. We took quite a spill and lost two rods.

I really like the Shimano Crucial series rods. I particularly like the 6'6" medium light model for throwing smallmouth baits. You can try the Shimano's and the St Croix (among others) at Bass Pro Shops. I paired it with a Pflueger Supreme spinning reel. It's a very light, nicely balanced rig. Have fun at Bass Pro!

Ouch
muskalungee  06/08/2008 - 13:04    That always hurts, but I'm glad all you lost was rods. Shallow riffles are some of the worst (and most dangerous) spots on the river. My worst yakcident also occurred in water like that and I got pinned under my yak, fortunately there was a guy fishing on shore that was able to come out and save me before my knee got ripped to shreds.

Good lessons learned, thanks for sharing.

As for Rods, I've purchased quite a few over the past 2 years (I've broken 4) and the rod I am most happy with is still my St. Croix 6'6" MF. As for reels, I still haven't found one I am totally in love with but I am currently using (and happy with) the Pflueger Presidents in the lower price range and the Shimano Stradic in the mid-range. Whatever you do...DO NOT buy a BPS Johnny Morris edition. I bought this reel b/c it was supposed to reduce line twists and I have had more trouble with this reel than any other I have ever used.

Also, I would recommend looking for a used one on ebay (especially a stradic) and you can get a good deal. Here's a quick look at the ones already out there: (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=stradic&category0=
Be safe, and you you're bro and me and theduder need to get out soon.

Thanks
Reel Lunker  06/08/2008 - 15:08    What kind of problems have you been having with it? That was actually the reel I was looking to buy. I would like to actually go down to bass pro and see them (a few of the reals I have been looking at) for myself. You can't buy everything on the internet sight unseen. But thanks for the heads up.

My Rant
muskalungee  06/09/2008 - 11:16    I posted a thread on RiverSmallies about it:

But it looks like it may just be my specific reel as others haven't had the same experience. Hopefully I can figure out what is going wrong and then fix it. With 11 bearings the reel is definitely smooth....just can't get to that point w/o the uber line twists.
