Wow!
Steve826  01/27/2008 - 10:44    I did some searching around and couldn't find any pictures either. I'd love to see them...I'm gonna keep looking. According to the DNR record page, it breaks the old record for LM bass by 7 ounces. I didn't think the Potomac had bass like that...I guess the Lower Potomac has the bigger fish than the Upper. After some guy caught a LM bass that was around 10.5 pounds at Deep Creek Lake last year, I thought Deep Creek had the potential state record. Guess not. Either way, pretty cool.

This brings up a question- what would you guys do if you caught the state record? Would you keep it and mount it, or just get it certified and release it? I personally would mount it. It might sound wrong, but knowing the fish on your wall is a state record that you caught would give you a sense of pride. What would you guys do?

I have a friend that is a ver
TightLine  01/27/2008 - 20:25    I have a friend that is a very good taxidermist, and he has said that he can certainly do reproductions that look great, but using the actual fish would look better. Ive turned so many fish loose over the years, that I would be tempted to have a state record mounted. A fish that old would probably not live much longer, and would probably not be the best spawner either...like I said, I would be tempted, but it would be awful hard to kill a fish like that.

OK, now a true story. As many of you know, I was born and raised in Virginia, and fished the tidal Potomac for years. The biggest LM I ever caught out of the river was just over 6 lbs...but I met a guy from Missouri that ended up being my best fishing buddy. He moved here and joined the bass club I was in. I showed him all my spots in Aquia Creek (where we both lived). So, I came home from work one day, and my wife says, John called, and you have got to go down to his house...I immediately thought, well he either bought a new boat, or caught a big fish.

Of course I drive to his house and he calls me into the garage. He opens up his freezer and pulls out a green garbage bag. He reaches inside and pulls out a humongus LM (still alive and wiggling)...I said jeez that thing must be at least 8 lbs...he says 10 right on the nose. He had it weighed on certified scales at a tackle shop (Capt. Bobs in Stafford VA)also received a Va citation, and got it mounted. He says to me "guess where I caught it"...right in that spot you showed me..he caught it behind this rock right on the edge of the channel you could only see when the wind blew all of the water out of the creek...I had never caught a fish over 3 1/2 there. Of course he caught it on my favorite lure too (for Aquia)...a bomber model 7A firetiger.

He had taken off early for a dentis appt. and went fishing after the appointment.

Also, I had heard of a fish of 13 lbs caught in Mattawoman creek back in the eighties. I can't remember the guys name, but he had a trolling motor repair shop in VA.

Ask Tightline
Captwalleye  01/27/2008 - 17:17    Ask Tightline after he catches one.As far as I'm concern he's the one who has the best shot of catching one.Once he gets his boat back in Liberty "Watch out"! It's coming and it may just be sooner than you think. Get em Bill!

Mounting
Reel Lunker  01/27/2008 - 12:08    I dont actually think you need to keep the fish for mounting purposes. Any fish that you caught and would like mounted can be recreated from the pictures taken. Somebody please correct me if I am wrong.

Have to Keep for Validation
muskalungee  01/27/2008 - 15:16    In order to obtain the state record you have to keep it in order to get it to a "certified" weigh station to get it documented. If you have a way to keep it alive up to that point and then release it then you can certainly do that but most likely it will be dead as a door nail by the time you're through with all the photos and rigmarole.

The official rules are here: http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/fishingreport/record.html
