GMCO map and "fish traps"
space inwaders  12/31/2008 - 13:20  Trip Tools  Potomac    I recently got a copy of GMCO upper potomac map from dam 4 to great falls. I noticed 2 places marked on the map called "fish traps". Has anyone seen these? What are they?

Noticed that this map also labels the old rubble dam at seneca breaks as "dam 2". I had read that it was built by Native Americans before European settlers arrived. I figured dam no 2 was the washington aqueduct dam-great falls dam, and dam 1 must be little falls dam. (?)

Many interesting features are marked, like old mills, canals, roadbeds, and some named holes, boatramps, wading areas (most not near roads or parking??), rapids, riffles, dams, historic sites, and roadways.
Need a Jon Boat
DanMarino  12/30/2008 - 10:02  Potomac    Hello Folks,

I've been lurking around for a few months and decided to post about this. I'm in need of a 14-16 ft jon boat for myself and my 11 year old son to fish the upper Potomac River. Late this summer and early fall we hit the Potomac River a bunch and wet waded. We had some success, but encountered a fair many snakes and had a number of times where we stumbled around. So I'm looking for a basic jon boat that my son and I could more safely fish the river with. Does anyone have any suggestions where I might find a used jon boat?

I tried to talk my son into us getting two sit on top kayaks, but he's not comfortable doing that. He's got visions of flipping over or getting swept down the river. So looks like a flat bottom jon boat would be preferred.
high water times
space inwaders  12/29/2008 - 17:04  Roll Your Own    The water has been high lately, but during the past few warm days I had to give it a shot.

I went out 12/24 for the evening, found all of my favorite spots underwater... I was able to fish a descent looking back eddy, but i found no signs of life.

After a few days, i went out saturday 12/27 and sunday 12/28 evenings to try and take advantage of the unusually warm weather. The water had steadily warmed up to the 40 degree mark, but all my favorite spots were still in-accessible. I hiked around a bit sunday, and found some interesting spots, although not exactly what i was hoping to find. Still no life from below.
cold water Smallies
spothogg  12/28/2008 - 18:32  Friends of MDfishing.org  River  Roll Your Own    Got out on a river not near you. Had to get a few things fixed on the boat and trailer. Afterward I asked repairman Tom if he wanted to go out for a few hours. So away we went. Water was stained and co co cold. 35deg, air temp about 40. We managed to pick up three. Tom got two on a jerk bait and I one on a hair jig. Three in two hours. Hope that didn't spoil me for the rest of the winter. Felt good to get out. Looking forward to New years.

PFD Shopping
Steve826  12/27/2008 - 14:37    Can anyone recommend a good quality PFD for a relatively low price? Me and my family are going to BPS in a week or two and me and dad want to get our PFD's while we're there for the canoe once we get it. We figured that since it's offseason prices might be lower. I saw that BPS has their own brand for $30.00. So if anyone could recommend a comfortable PFD for a reasonable price I would appreciate it :)

Timonium Fishing Expo January 8th-11th
Steve826  12/12/2008 - 16:08  Roll Your Own  Shows and Events    25th annual fishing expo in Timonium is from Thursday January 8th through Sunday January 11th. More info at fishingexpo.com (Hey Mike, i tried the HTML codes to link the site but I couldn't get it to work? If you want to make it into a link, go ahead.) Anyone ever been to one of these? Anyone plan on going this year? I've heard decent things about them, and if nothing else it's a good way to cure cabin fever. Me and my dad will be there Saturday the 10th.

12/10 on the river
space inwaders  12/11/2008 - 22:15  Trip Reports  River  Roll Your Own    Saturday hours at the new shop gave me a day off on weds- the 2nd day of warmer temps and rainfall with a cold front due later in the day.

I arrived around 1pm and hiked to an area i found earlier this year- farther than i remembered from the car- a nice bit of rapids and large rocks/deeper water over a large area. Wading is easy there along the banks. The water level was even lower than the last time i was there. I fished about an hour with the 4 3/4" sjb- nothing but fog rolling down the river.

WHAT?? It gets a little cold and everyone moves to Florida for the winter? Where the trip reports people??
ogbudha  12/07/2008 - 10:15  Trip Reports  River  Roll Your Own    Now that Ive stirred the pot a little..Ive been hitting the Lower Potomac in a buddies Ranger. Lots of winter hole and warm water discharge areas are producing fish. Jigs and blade baits have been producing some decent largemouth action. All fish are very fat but are anything but aggressive. The bait really bunches up in certain creeks this time of year..to the point where u can feel the ticks on the jig as you bring it back through certain spots.

In the last 3 trips the biggest fish has been just under 5lbs. Also a 12 pound catfish came off SJB ....thought we had state record largemouth at first.
Liberty Wed. Nov. 26
TightLine  11/27/2008 - 18:27  Trip Reports  Liberty  Roll Your Own    Hit Liberty again. I got in the water about 11:00 a.m. I decided I wanted to fish something different, so I headed to some old house foundations in 20-35 feet of water. It's a pretty long ride, so I decided to take it easy and troll all the way...thought I might happen upon a striper. Anyway, I could not believe I didn't catch a fish. I thought the vertical structures right on the edge of the creek channel would pay off...but it wasn't to be. I vertical jigged a blade bait, and slowly pulled a big "jig and pig" through all the structures, but didn't even get a tap. Water dropped another degree to 48.9, had a stiff cold wind blowing. When I got home I checked the air temps...39 degrees. The pellet stove sure felt great. I'll be back out on Friday...
